Excerpt from Letters of George Sand: With Preface and Biographical Sketch by the Translator; Illustrated With Sir Portraits of George Sand at Various Periods of Her Life What can you be doing in the country in this frightful weather? Perhaps the weather is fine where you are? Here, you might imagine it to be the end Of all things; the last fortnight has been one of storm and tempest I am quite ill through it. Fortunately my novel is completed; for, under the effect of the electricity with which the air is charged, I might have copied your de'nouement, and made M. Sylvestre kill his jade Of a wife. But he had not any such right, not being an artiste - that is to say, a man of. Impulse - but rather priding himself upon being a philosopher, that is to say, a man Of reflection. Your de'nouement must, at any rate, be considered the true one, since my good hero felt that, if he should again become enamoured of his wife, he would kill her. Excerpt from Novels by George Sand, Vol. 17 Be brave with me, dear Camille, everything will be all right; God does not desert those who rely on Him and who do their best to assist His merciful providence. The thing that makes it most painful for me to carry out my resolution is your tears and the children's l have dith culty in keeping back my own when 1 think of them; but I absolutely must do it, you see l I could not sit with folded arms when you have four children to bring up. Asl have courage, good health and no other tie in this world than my affection for you and those poor angels of the blessed Lord, it was my place to go away and earn a living for us all. I will succeed, too, you may be sure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Letters of George Wyndham, 1877-1913, Vol. 1 Although a year has passed since George Wyndham died, his nearest relations and friends cannot yet realize their loss. There are men who give so much, who so completely satisfy the needs of others that they do not only influence the life of these others but become a part of it. Such men do not die to their friends. Conscious thought may realize their absence, but sub-conscious thought remains pervaded by their sympathy and continues as before to share with them every impression of beauty, action, or endeavour. It is not time but this continuity of sympathy that blunts the sting of separation. The preparation of these volumes has so fostered and maintained the sense of intimacy and companionship, that it is hoped that the reading of them may do the same for those for whom they have been prepared. George Wyndham's letters are not studied compositions, and for that reason they reflect his mind more truly than do his other writings, either in prose or verse. They supply an almost complete record of his every mood, his interests, his aspirations and his ideals. Living, he wished to share each impression of his full life with his friends; his letters enable us to share them still. Excerpt from Letters, Vol. 1 I have not yet heard whether my predecessors have claimed a right of giving degrees; but if they have, in the present ferment here against the English, it would be very unpopular in me to exercise such a power in favour of one of my countrymen, nor would it answer the end he proposes. He will speedily wait upon your Grace in hopes of obtaining this favour at your hands. I am glad to find, by the King's speech and the addresses of both houses, which is the last news we have had, that you are likely to have a quiet sessions in England, and wish, when our turn comes, we may have as easy a one here. I shall always be proud of receiving your Grace's commands, and am, my Lord, Your Grace's most humble, and Most obedient Servant, Hu. Armagh. My Lord, It was Sunday last before I had the honour of your Grace's of the 17th past: I am very glad to find his Majesty's affairs go so smoothly in the Parliament in England; I could heartily wish every thing was so easy here.
