How is it possible for God to be God, in a world where human beings find it quite natural to live and think as if they themselves stood at the center of things? Philip Watson, outstanding English Methodist, whose scholarly and objective research on Luther is contributing greatly to contemporary Protestant evaluation of the Reformer, finds his answer to the question in ÒLuther's Copernican Revolution.Ó Copernicus challenged the old theory that the sun moves around the Earth. He said that the sun is the center of things and the earth moves around it. Similarly, Luther challenged the teaching, in effect, that mortals are at the center of things, and that everything moves around them. Not so. God is the center. Without Him, humanity is nothing. Human salvation lies not in things mortals do, but in what God does - through Christ. His point determines Watson's theme, ÒLet God Be GodÓ - that is, let humanity recognize God's will and way. Significantly, this study of Luther by a non-Lutheran indicates the influence of Scandinavian sources in the study and research of Watson. In his Preface, the author acknowledges assistance from such Swedish scholars as AulŽn, Nygren, Bring, and others. The first part of Let God Be God evaluates Luther as a theologian and points out the motif of his thought. The book proceeds to concentrate on three major themes in Luther: The Revelation of God, The Theology of the Cross, and The Doctrine of the Word. Philip Watson writes forcefully - with the zeal of one who has made a discovery that he feels must be shared with others. His simple literary expression makes clear some profound theological distinctions that are often difficult for the average reader to comprehend. Notes on each chapter contain numerous quotations from Luther. Those already acquainted with Luther will find this interpretation of his lectures, writings, and sermons particularly stimulating. Let God Be God is significant reading for the student and lay person who wants to know better the theology of the Reformer.
Family members hurt us. Friends betray us. Fellow Christians deceive us. But Jesus provides a path through the pain—the Lord’s Prayer. In The Wall Around Your Heart, Mary DeMuth shows you that you can reach wholeness and healing in the aftermath of painful relationships by following the road map of the Lord’s Prayer. You’ll walk through story after story of hurt people who are led through biblical truth into amazing, life-sustaining, joyful growth. Life is hard. People can be mean and petty and awful. But they can also be amazing and beautiful and sacrificial. God is good. He is faithful. You can trust him with your relationships. “He’ll send people to call out what is hard in your heart,” Mary shares. “And that’s a gift to you.” Allow God to access the wall around your heart. Dare to say, “Tear down the bricks, Lord, whatever it takes.” Pray first. Ask for bravery—for yourself and for others. Risk engaging despite your hurt. Seek the shelter of Jesus. You don’t have to resign yourself to your wounds! You can rise above the pain. You’ll usher in a new life—an openhearted way of relating to others that expands the kingdom of God. In the process, you’ll draw closer to Jesus, be healed, and become an agent of healing to others.
Step by step, layman's terms, points out the way to a joyous affirmation of your spiritual faith--a soothing refuge in times of trouble and doubt.
Everyone thinks you’ve got it together. But inside, you’re asking, “Am I enough?” No matter how good we look to others, the nagging voice of self-doubt is hard to shake. We ask questions like: If people really knew me would they still accept me? Will I be rejected when I can’t perform? Can I pull this off? What if I end up alone? Am I missing out on what life should be because I can’t shake this fear? If you find yourself having thoughts like these, Erica Wiggenhorn wants to lead you to freedom. Drawing from the story of Moses—the greatest self-doubter in the Bible—Erica shows how self-doubt is tied closely to self-reliance. It’s only when you cast yourself on God that you find the true source of strength. Are you enough? The answer is no . . . but your God certainly is. Step out in His power instead of your own and watch your confidence blossom because you’re in the hands of I AM.
Evangelist Greg Laurie calls all Christians back to radical New Testament living in his latest offering, Let God Change Your Life. Imagine what it would have been like to be a follower of Jesus; first-century Christians walked away from their old lives just to be where He was. What they learned, sitting at His feet, was discipleship. And when His work on earth was done, first-century Christians took His words and example and spread out, teaching the gospel to everyone. The good news is that we, too, can participate in this lifestyle. Laurie drills it down in three simple ideas: get to know Jesus, follow His plan for discipleship, and use it to tell others what we know. Laurie’s tone is clear, direct, and biblical.
When it was published in 1987, Letting God was the first book to explore the themes of the Twelve-Step programs within the context of Christian tradition. Now revised to emphasize its spiritual focus, and including an introduction presenting a monthly theme, each daily reading begins with a selection from the New Testament. These are followed by eloquent, thought-provoking meditations that reveal how the passages apply to Christian living today, and conclude with a brief prayer. This inspiring daily devotional strengthens and encourages the reader, providing sustenance for the sould and practical insights on everyday life.
