Recently, UNESCO has gradually started to recognize world geoparks ? territorial spaces with a geological heritage of international importance. This classification presents real challenges. Development strategies must align with the recommendations advocated by various non-governmental organizations. It is also necessary to involve the local actors, both in the preparation of application forms and in the implementation of a management plan that is suitable for sustainable global development. Managing the tensions and asymmetries that exist between the different groups of actors (politicians, managers, scientists, representatives of local populations) constitutes another major issue. It is in this context and through various case studies that this book questions the aims of the UNESCO global geoparks ? in terms of heritage inventory and conservation, the participation of local populations, the local development of a territory and its enhancement through heritage interpretation.
The Art of Subtraction is the first full-length study on the CD-ROM as a creative platform. Bruno Lessard traces the rise and relatively rapid fall of the CD-ROM in the 1980s and 1990s and its impact as a creative platform for media artists such as Jean-Louis Boissier, Zoe Beloff, Adriene Jenik, and Chris Marker. Although the CD-ROM was not a lasting commercial success it was a vibrant medium that allowed for experimentation in adapting literary works. Building on the work of Gilles Deleuze and Michele Foucault, Lessard establishes a comparative framework for linking digital adaptations with innovative concepts such as 'subtractive adaptation' and the 'object image' that will be of interest to researchers examining literary adaptations on other digital platforms such as websites, smart phones, tablets, and digital games. The Art of Subtraction is a fascinating study of intermediality in the late twentieth century and it provides the first chapter in the yet unwritten history of digital adaptation.
Videomapping with its use of digital images is an audiovisual format that has gained traction with the creative industries. It consists of projecting images onto diverse surfaces, according to their geometric characteristics. The symposium "Heritage and Digital Humanities," organized by the Labex ArtsH2H (Paris 8-Paris Ouest University), together with the French national archives and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France - on the occasion of the inauguration of the university's master's degree for "Cultural Mediation, Heritage and Digital Technologies" - was the first occasion to look for potential links between an emerging discipline in quest of its identity, digital humanities, and concepts of heritage, which have undergone renewal and been democratized through technical, social, and political changes. La thèse approche les implications de la numérisation et publication des archives audiovisuelles. En particulier, on étudie la remédiation des vidéos à travers de nouveaux supports et dispositifs numériques. On utilise une approche sémiotique pour comprendre les enjeux théoriques liés à cette forme de recontextualisation des archives du point de vue de leur signification. Le but étant de concevoir une rhétorique de la réexploitation des documents audiovisuels afin de mieux les valoriser. La thèse affronte ainsi des défis de terrains majeurs pour les institutions patrimoniales et des défis scientifiques pour la discipline sémiotique. Cette dernière doit donc s'adapter à l'égard d'un objet historique, les archives, visant en même temps de nouveaux dispositifs, les médias numériques. D'un point de vue théorique il s'agit de tenir compte, dans le cadre d'une approche sémiotique, des enjeux historiques d'un côté, et d'une théorie du support de l'autre.
Practices associated with the culture of “scholarly” reading have been developed over many centuries and annotations themselves have become the subject of study, either as additional elements in connection with the original texts or as documents in their own right. The first “scholarly” reading techniques, seen historically from the 12th Century onwards, combine reading and writing in a process known as lettrure, involving both attentive reading and commentary. The Internet has transformed this activity, adding technical layers that relate both to the reading and writing process as well as to the circulation of texts; their potential and effective augmentation, diffusion, and reception. This book examines digitized reading and writing by focusing primarily on the conditions for the co-construction of scientific knowledge and its augmentation. The authors present numerous examples of studies and personal feedback concerning the intellectual process, open critical spaces, collaborative scholarly publishing, methods for the circulation and mediatization of knowledge, as well as the techniques and tools employed.
