Although anthropologists and cultural geographers have explored "place" in various senses, little cross-cultural examination of "kinds of place," or ecotopes, has been presented from an ethno-ecological perspective. In this volume, indigenous and local understandings of landscape are investigated in order to better understand how human communities relate to their terrestrial and aquatic resources. The contributors go beyond the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) literature and offer valuable insights on ecology and on land and resources management, emphasizing the perception of landscape above the level of species and their folk classification. Focusing on the ways traditional people perceive and manage land and biotic resources within diverse regional and cultural settings, the contributors address theoretical issues and present case studies from North America, Mexico, Amazonia, tropical Asia, Africa and Europe.

This book includes revised dissertation chapters from the author’s (second) PhD, which was awarded in 2020 by Murdoch University, Australia. It also includes three chapters summarising recent developments. This was an innovative, transdisciplinary, research project, using phenomenology as the over-arching meta-paradigm. The investigation involved collaborations and literature reviews across numerous disciplines, including philosophy, geography, ethnoecology, sociology and cultural studies. The book discusses three landscape language (ethnophysiography) case studies with Indigenous peoples in Australia and the USA. It features a detailed discussion of transdisciplinarity and provides a comprehensive example of how this approach can be applied to complex dwelling relationships, which people, from different cultures, have with specific topographic environments, turning terrain into landscape. It involves using phenomenology as a transdisciplinary meta-paradigm and describes phenomenological methods for integrating physical and social sciences, including an analysis of the worldviews of Indigenous peoples (for example, Manyjilyjarra Jukurrpa as Heideggerian topology).
This sensitive examination of the meanings of landscape draws on the author's rich experience with diverse enviornments and peoples: the Gitksan and Witsuwit'en of norwestern British Columbia, the Kaska Dena of the southern Yukon, and the Gwich'in of the Mackenzie Delta. Johnson maintains that the ways people understand and act upon land have wide implications, shaping cultures and ways of life, determining identity and polity, and creating and mainting environmental relationships and economies. Her emphassis on landscape and ways of knowing the land provides a particular take on ecological relationships of First Peoples to land.

Naming the places of the world is an essential human act of territorialization. As the subject of conflict or dispute, naming plays out in numerous ways that involve collective and individual relationships to space, whether functional or imaginary, as well as the identities related to them. Name traces also differ together with their inscription within landscapes and history. Names constitute a heritage, they bear witness, they mark places and thus contribute to the foundation of territories. Beyond place names, place naming reveals the functions and uses of names, but also the contradictory meanings that society bestows on them.
