The subjects of the symposia are on composite materials with matrices behaving as brittle in normal or special conditions. Brittle matrix composites are applied in various domains (civil engineering, mechanical equipment and machinery, vehicles, etc.) and in the last decades their importance is increasing together with their variety. Papers include: aggregate-binder composites (concretes, fibre concretes, rocks); sintered materials (ceramics); high strength composites with brittle matrices. In principle, the general problems of structures made of composite materials are not included in the papers. Various approaches to the material engineering problems are presented in the papers.
This project investigated the properties and performance of the products used for spall repair of concrete pavement. A survey of Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintenance engineers produced a roster of 10 repair materials currently in use in the state. After identifying the key characteristics of a successful repair material, a laboratory testing program was developed to evaluate the properties of the repair materials. These materials were tested for strength, compatibility, and bond to quantify their characteristics relative to those products known to work well.
Past work and current technical literature were reviewed to determine potential capping materials for expedient repair of small craters (less than 20 by 20 feet repair areas) in airfield pavements. Seven materials identified in the literature review were tested in the laboratory to develop information on their strength and cure requirements. Accelerated high alumina cement, magnesium phosphate cement, three commercial asphalt products and unsurfaced, well compacted aggregate were recommended for field testing as the most promising small crater repair materials.
