Mitjançant una exploració de diverses representacions culturals que es van dur a terme en la segona meitat del segle XIX, aquest volum mostra que en l'imaginari de l'Espanya metropolitana de l'època existia una identitat imperial que ha desaparegut quasi per complet de la historiografia contemporània. L'autora analitza les petjades de l'imperi que es troben en l'Exposició de les Illes Filipines a Madrid (1887) i la commemoració del IV Centenari del Descobriment d'Amèrica (1892), entre altres representacions del repertori simbòlic de l'imaginari nacional, i explora una sèrie de textos, objectes i pràctiques culturals que posen de manifest aquella consciència imperial que, fins a ben entrat el segle XX, estava imbricada en la identitat de la nació malgrat haver patit l'imperi dues importants descolonitzacions en 1824 i en 1898.

Racism has historically been a taboo topic in Mexico. This is largely due to the nationalist project of mestizaje which contends that because all Mexicans are racially mixed, race is not a salient political issue. In recent years, however, race and racism have become important topics of debate in the country’s public sphere and academia. This book introduces readers to a sample of these diverse and sometimes conflicting views that also intersect with discussions of class. The activists and scholars included in the volume come from fields such as anthropology, linguistics, history, sociology, and political science. This volume explores several notable themes related to social, political, and religious movements in Latin America and offers insightful historical perspectives to understand national, regional, and global issues from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. This volume’s collected chapters focus on the Latin American society and are divided into three sections. The first section, Social, presents some cultural, demographic, and urban changes that have occurred with increasing frequency in Latin America from the early twentieth century onward.
