In 1912, Tony Jannus, a handsome 22 year-old pilot attempts to set a record for the longest flight over water, following the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Even though he suffers from an acute appendicitis, he doggedly continues the record-breaking flight. Along the way to New Orleans, he meets attractive young women who fall in love with him and further complicate his life. Later, he becomes chief pilot of the first scheduled airline, operating between Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida. The airline only operates during the tourist season and is highly successful. When the airline closes, Tony and his brother spend the summer flying exhibitions and passengers at Cedar Point on Lake Erie to raise money for an airplane manufacturing plant they intend to open in Baltimore. They build a quality airplane, but their business venture fails because they cannot compete with major airplane manufacturers such as the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtiss. When they close the plant, Tony goes to work for Glenn Curtiss who sends him to Sevastopol, Russia to train the Czar's naval pilots how to fly seaplanes before the United States enters World War I. While training pilots for the Russian Navy, he is drawn into combat against German submarines, which are sinking Russian warships in the Black Sea. War tests his courage and changes his happy-go-lucky outlook on life. He returns to the United States and finds the woman he wants to marry, but the romance is stormy and they break off the relationship. He goes back to Russia to train pilots in a more advanced airplane. He is despondent in Russia until his former sweetheart writes him and says she loves him. They set a date to marry. Important aviation milestones in this historical novel actually happened. The author has embellished personal relationships and events.
ought¿s A-7 Corsair II served the U.S. Navy for over over two decades, and flew with distinction during the Vietnam conflict. The subsonic A-7 was based on Chance Vought¿s supersonic F-8 Crusader. It boasted a heads-up display, an inertial navigation system, and other innovations. The plane entered service in 1966, and served in Vietnam in late 1967. Its performance was impressive. The USS Ranger¿s VA-147 flew over 1,400 sorties with the loss of only one aircraft. The Air Force purchased an advanced version, the A-7D, equipped with a more powerful engine. The plane later flew missions over Lebanon, Libya, Grenada, Panama, and Iraq. The last planes in U.S inventory were retired in 1991. Originally printed by the U.S. Navy and Vought, this handbook for the A-7 provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of this famous aircraft. Originally classified ¿restricted¿, the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form.
One of the great aircraft of the Cold War era, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was the most heavily produced supersonic, all-weather fighter bomber. Capable of a top speed of Mach 2.23, it set sixteen world records including an absolute speed record of 1,606 mph and an altitude record of 98,557 feet. The F-4 flew Vietnam, in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Gulf War and amassed a record of 393 aerial victories. F-4s also flew as part of the USAF Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration teams. Originally printed by McDonnell and the U.S. Navy in the 1960s, this flight operating handbook taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "restricted", the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.
Th is book is a love story. Its main focus is on ten years in the life of Len. His chance meeting with a lovely young Southern girl, Velma, was to change his life dramatically. His plans to finish College were halted by his traveling bug so he took a break from school, sold his motorcycle, and went back-packing to Europe with only $1,000 Dollars in his pocket, a Euro-Pass train Ticket for a month, and a return airplane ticket home. Unexpected fatherhood in Germany at a young age made him become more responsible and serious about his dreams. When he returned to California he was now a young family man while working as a carpenter in construction and attending evening University and Flight School on weekends. His positive thinking methods, scholarships, grants, and student loans paid off and he graduated with an Airway Science Degree in addition to all his Pilot ratings and Certificates. Thereafter, his life became more of an adventure and he travelled around the world working for various Airlines as a Contract Pilot.

Developed as both an air superiority fighter and a long-range naval interceptor, Grumman's F-14 Tomcat was the U.S. Navy's primary fighter from 1974 until 2006. Over 700 were built. The F-14 flew its first combat missions shortly after its initial deployment in late 1974, flying in support of the American withdrawal from Saigon. In 1981 it drew first blood, as two F-14s from VF-41 downed two Libyan Su-22s. The plane compiled a notable combat record for the United States in both Gulf Wars and NATO actions in Bosnia. Planes sold to the Shah of Iran prior to his ouster remain the last F-14s in active service, as the U.S. Navy retired it in October 2006. This F-14 pilot's flight operating handbook was originally produced by the U.S. Navy. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety. It provides a fascinating view inside the cockpit of one of history's great planes.
