Killer 'Cane takes place in the Florida Everglades, which was still a newly settled frontier in the 1920s. On the night of September 16, 1928, a hurricane swung up from Puerto Rico and collided, quite unexpectedly, with Palm Beach. The powerful winds from the storm burst a dike and sent a twenty-foot wall of water through three towns, killing over two thousand people, a third of the area's population. Robert Mykle shows how the residents of the Everglades had believed prematurely that they had tamed nature, how racial attitudes at the time compounded the disaster, and how in the aftermath the cleanup of rapidly decaying corpses was such a horrifying task that some workers went mad. Killer 'Cane is a vivid description of America's second-greatest natural disaster, coming between the financial disasters of the Florida real-estate bust and the onset of the Great Depression.

A half-human, half-vampire hunts the bloodsucker who bit her in this “compelling” Bram Stoker Award-winning debut (Publishers Weekly). One spring night in London, heiress Denise Thorne disappears while partying at a nightclub, never to be seen again. That very same night, Sonja Blue, a tough-as-nails punk vampire/vampire-slayer, conceived in terror and blood, is borne from the city’s gutters. Saved by modern medicine before she could die, she is a living vampire who still possesses a soul and is determined to fight for what remains of her humanity. In the years since her bizarre resurrection, Sonja Blue travels the globe, hunting down and disposing of those creatures that prey on the innocent while searching for the vampire Noble who created her. But when she investigates a sleazy televangelist named Catherine Wheele, who is exploiting Denise Thorne’s parents, Sonja finds herself up against a powerful inhuman adversary. But as dangerous as Catherine Wheele proves to be, Sonja’s greatest foe remains the Other, the demonic personality with whom she is locked in a constant battle for control of their shared body. Can Sonja Blue overcome her inner demon in time to rescue an innocent man from Catherine Wheele’s unholy clutches? Acknowledged as one of the first Urban Fantasy novels, Sunglasses After Dark burst onto the fantasy/horror scene in 1989, garnering widespread critical praise and winning the Horror Writers Association’s coveted Bram Stoker Award, as well as the British Fantasy Society’s Icarus Award. New edition: Revised and edited by the author.
Learn how to make 100 perfectly imperfect pies with time-honored techniques to maximize taste from the founder of Los Angeles’ beloved Pie Hole bakery. In Pie Is Messy, Rebecca Grasley shares how she chased her dream of opening a California pie shop after retiring from a lifetime of nursing and factory work on the East Coast. Trading in the gingham curtains and cozy vibes of rural Pennsylvania for the industrial, tattoo-splattered Los Angeles Arts District, she set up shop with her son and his restaurant friend, marrying the traditional pies Becky learned to make from her grandmother with funky, irreverent flavors inspired by the new generation. In 2011, The Pie Hole was born—and it was a hit. Now Becky is ready to share the pie gospel with home cooks everywhere, beginning with abandoning the idea of perfection. Pie is, after all, messy! Through 100 recipes, Pie is Messy takes readers from the basics of making crust to preparing contemporary hits from The Pie Hole. Each chapter covers a different category of pie and is broken down into two sections: Old School Pies and New School Pies. In the chapter Fruit Pies you’ll find Old School Pies such as Blue Ribbon Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, and Lemon-Pear Pie and New School Pies such as Candied Lemon Chess Pie, Drunken Plum Frangipane Tart, and Vegan Blackberry-Mango Galette. The structure of each chapter allows you to learn the basics through classic recipes, and then see how they can be adapted and updated with more contemporary flavors and techniques. Becky also shares stories from life creating pie recipes at The Pie Hole and from generations of her pie-loving family. In addition, she offers tutorials for all possible crust variations, tips and tricks for gussying up your pie’s presentation, and making substitutions for vegan or gluten-free options. Pie Is Messy is beginner friendly, warm, and non-intimidating, and creative enough for more advanced bakers. So roll up your sleeves, grab your pie tins, and prepare to get messy!
This is the third novel based around the character of D.C.I Steven Price by Joseph and Linda Pye. It is the fourth book to be published in eighteen months by the couple who only met in 2008. Joseph has had the stories in his head for a long while and has even written them in the past although never got them published. Linda writes the female parts and edits the books and they work together well as a team. The first three books are now in the local library and are being well received by customers as they are often out on loan. The accompanying photo was taken in Queensland, Australia, where the couple spent five weeks visiting family, having a 'mock up' wedding so that Joseph's sister Marilyn could be there as she couldn't make the real one later in the year, her husband Derek, is a marriage celebrant over there. We made many good friends during out time over there and miss them all lots as we do our family and friends that we don't see so often.
