Globalized markets offer great opportunities for their players, but operating successfully in this complex environment requires different approaches than in a domestic environment. Making best use of the availability of resources like goods, employees and services from abroad on the one hand, but managing challenges like increasing competition, pressure on costs and innovation and the high dynamic on many foreign markets on the other hand are so-phisticated tasks an international company nowadays has to deal with. Global interaction requires a company to cooperate with partners in the different countries. Due to many reasons, cooperating successfully on such international level is very difficult. Explain-ing the requirements and challenges of cross-national projects, emphasising the importance of cultural differences and their consideration in inter-cultural project work and determining how such projects can be managed successfully is subject of this paper.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present literature that suggests that project teams comprising members from culturally diverse backgrounds bring fresh ideas and new approaches to problem solving. The challenge, however, is that they also introduce different understandings and expectations regarding team dynamics and integration. The question becomes how a project manager can effectively work and influence a multicultural construction project team, at the same time being attentive to the diversity and creating the structure required for success.Design/methodology/approach - Using a qualitative methodology, participants of heavy construction engineering projects revealed a number of multi-dimensional factors that either facilitated or limited the effectiveness of multicultural teamwork. These were synthesised into a framework of eight key dimensions that need to be considered when managing multicultural teams. The identified key dimensions include: leadership style, team selection and composition process, cross-cultural management of team development process, cross-cultural communication, cross-cultural collectivism, cross-cultural trust, cross-cultural management and cross-cultural uncertainty.Findings - The proposed framework has implications for construction managers who work with multicultural teams and are committed to improving team performance and productivity. The utilisation of the proposed framework would not instantly transform multicultural teams into high-performing ones; however, it does identify eight key cross-cultural dimensions, which need to be considered.Originality/value - Though the benefits of culturally diverse teams have been acknowledged within the industry, the study highlighted that cultural differences among project teams can cause conflict, misunderstanding and poor project performance.

Multicultural and multinational teams have become an important strategic and structural element of organizational work in our globalized world today. These teams are demonstrating their importance from the factory floors to the boardrooms of contemporary organizations. The emergence of multicultural teams is evident across a variety of organizations in the private, public, and civil society sectors. These developments have led to an increasing interest in the theory and practice of multicultural teams. Management educational and training programs are giving increasing attention to these developments. At the same time, there is emerging interest in research about and study of multicultural teams. This book emerged from our teaching, research, and consulting with multic- tural and diverse teams in multiple sectors over the last several years. In particular, we have developed and refined our ideas about the concepts in this book from teaching an advanced course called Effective Multicultural Teams in the Graduate Program at the School for International Training (SIT) in Vermont. We have learned from the rich background of students who are from, and have worked in, six con- nents, and who are, or plan to be, working in the public, educational, not-for-profit, and for-profit sectors.
