Genealogy research led the author to stories about lynchings near his home town in Kentucky. Further research uncovered two distant cousins who participated in hangings, one in a lynching and the other on the jury of the last public hanging in the United States. The author's goal in revisiting this shameful period in our history is to bring together in one work the details of the lynchings in which his ancestors were involved and those that occurred near the locations where he was raised and spent the formative years of his youth. These include Warren, Logan, Daviess, and Mason Counties. Although none of the lynchings discussed occurred in the author's lifetime, they helped form the culture where he was raised and that culture became part of who he was and is today. It is the author's hope that in revisiting these events the hearts and souls of those filled with hate may soften and be replaced with love and tolerance of all regardless of their race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.

From its settlement in the late 1700s, the Black Patch-an agricultural region of western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee-has been known for its dark-fired, heavy-leafed tobacco, so green that it is called "black." But as the settlers of this region sowed the seeds of tobacco, they also sowed the seeds of violence. Violence was a key element in the white settlement of this frontier wilderness. After forcibly removing Native Americans from the region, white settlers established a tradition of violence that maintained order and morality. The Civil War and the industrial revolution also helped perpetuate violence in the Black Patch. With markedly divided sympathies during the Civil War, the Black Patch inspired guerrilla warfare against citizens and slaves by renegade bands of former soldiers from both sides. Marshall's study culminates with a discussion of the Night Riders' vigilante activity during Black Patch wars that originated with this country's shift from an agricultural society to an industrial one. By focusing on the violence in this culture, Marshall provides a key to understanding both the cultural components that were unique to the area and those that were shared with other isolated rural communities. She draws extensively from oral history and ethnographic methodology as well as court records, church records, diaries, and newspapers. This title was issued under the auspices of the Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching. A work of great authority because it was produced by Southern jurists, it was cited frequently in the 1932 Senate hearings on lynching. Its conclusions are based in part on a comprehensive survey of over 3,700 lynchings, mostly of African-Americans, between 1889 and 1932. Chadbourn also asked 1,000 prominent Southern lawyers and legislators how they would prevent the practice. Using this data he proposes a model lynching law. On January 20, 1942, black oil mill worker Cleo Wright assaulted a white woman in her home and nearly killed the first police officer who tried to arrest him. An angry mob then hauled Wright out of jail and dragged him through the streets of Sikeston, Missouri, before burning him alive. Wright's death was, unfortunately, not unique in American history, but what his death meant in the larger context of life in the United States in the twentieth-century is an important and compelling story. After the lynching, the U.S. Justice Department was forced to become involved in civil rights concerns for the first time, provoking a national reaction to violence on the home front at a time when the country was battling for democracy in Europe. Dominic Capeci unravels the tragic story of Wright's life on several stages, showing how these acts of violence were indicative not only of racial tension but the clash of the traditional and the modern brought about by the war. Capeci draws from a wide range of archival sources and personal interviews with the participants and spectators to draw vivid portraits of Wright, his victims, law-enforcement officials, and members of the lynch mob.
