From debut author Jennifer Gold comes a delicious, award-winning novel about the sweet and sour ingredients of life and love. Elle, an accomplished baker, has a recipe for every event in her life. But when she discovers her husband's infidelity, she doesn't know what to make of it. Jam, maybe? Definitely jam. Fed up with the stale crumbs of her marriage, Elle revisits past recipes and the events that inspired them. A recipe for scones reminds her of her father's death, cinnamon rolls signify the problematic courtship with her husband, and a batch of chocolate cookies casts Elle in a less-than-flattering light. Looking back, Elle soon realizes that some ingredients were missing all along. After confronting her husband, Elle indulges her sweet tooth in other ways, including a rebound that just leaves her more confused. As secrets from the past collide with the conflicts of the present, Elle struggles to manage her bakery business and maintain the relationships most important to her. In piecing her life back together, will Elle learn to take the bitter with the sweet?

Benjamin Franklin Orville is a boy who wants for nothing. He has his own pony, and he's caught the eye of the charming girl next door. He doesn't have a care in the world--until the day his mother sends him to market to get a chicken for dinner. Suddenly Benjy is caught up in a scuffle, kidnapped with a group of immigrants, and forced to work aboard the Ella Dawn--one of the most ill-reputed oystering vessels in Baltimore. He tries to plead his case, but his captors are unimpressed by Benjamin's way with language. Soon the boy knows only hard work and hunger, a little bit of German, and a whole lot about injustice. It's more of an education than he ever got at home. And along with a growling stomach and aching muscles, he also experiences the joys of the sea--a gentle rhythm that rocks him to sleep at night and freedom he never felt between the fancy walls of his home. Will Benjamin ever see home again? And if he does, will he know what to do there?

As I sit here and think of all the memories I could write about, I wonder, why do I choose these stories? I guess one could say it’s because days go by so quickly that before you know it, we’re old. Those turning points I thought about in our lives have turned in the blink of an eye. Whether or not you choose to complete reading this book is completely up to you. However, know just one thing: this book was put together with a lot of heart, soul, heartbreak, love, and, yes, tears. This book is written from three very different perspectives yet much the same woman, with very different stories of heartbreak and laughter. There is one very common thread, my love for God, along with my strength as a woman to persevere through some of the most horrific times of my life, not on my own accord—although at times I thought so—but by the grace and mercy of our Holy Savior, Jesus Christ! I would like to take this time to thank all those who went on my journeys with me—those who supported me, those who held me, those who cried with me, and yes, even those who gave me a kick on the rump when I needed it! I would also like to thank my church for being our rock on those days our lives turned into nothing more than a swamp. I dedicate this book to the ministry that has been helping me throughout the years, for all the goodness you gave to me and others. In his loving grace, Ava Alexandria
When my father was first diagnosed with Alzheimers, I read and researched everything I could get my hands on about the disease. Right off the bat I could tell if it was written by a physician, pharmaceutical company or even a nursing home. When caregivers are looking for help, the last thing they need is medical text so complex they already forgot what they read by the time its laid back down. This is what got me started on writing about common sense caregiving, which turned into a weekly column and now into this book. My goal is to make this book as caregiver friendly as possible. Sharing my triumphs and hardships from my plus three-thousand day campaign in dealing with the disease of Alzheimers and the world of memory-impairment. Gary Joseph LeBlanc is a columnist, speaker and book dealer from Spring Hill, Florida. He was the primary caregiver of his beloved father stricken with Alzheimers disease for nearly the past decade. LeBlancs weekly column appears in the Hernando Today, a Tampa Tribune Publication and other health publications. His writings offer insight and hope through his own journey of caregiving, dealing with the memory-impaired, given in a caregiver friendly manner.
TWO OCCULT TALES are now together in one volume: Respect for the Dead, set in Africa, and the gripping sequel, Sleight Return, set in witchy New England.
