This document is Volume II of the series reports that have been developed as part of the Development of a Kansas Statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture Project. This document is intended to guide the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and participating stakeholders in effectively using the Kansas Statewide ITS Architecture in the planning, design, implementation, and operation stages of ITS systems and projects. This plan investigates and identifies opportunities to further integrate various ITS systems at local, regional and statewide levels.
An Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) architecture describes the “big picture” for ITS deployment in terms of individual components (i.e. subsystems) that will perform the functions necessary to deliver the desired needs. It describes what is to be deployed but not how those systems are to be deployed. An ITS architecture defines the components and subsystems that must interface with each other, the functions to be performed by those subsystems and the data flows among these subsystems. The Kansas Statewide ITS Architecture is a roadmap for the deployment and integration of transportation systems in Kansas over the next 15 years. ... This document is Volume I of the series reports that have been developed as part of the Development of a Kansas Statewide ITS Architecture Project.
The Kansas Statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture has been created as a consensus view of what ITS systems the stakeholders within the architecture boundary have implemented and what systems they plan to implement in the future. By its nature, the architecture is not a static set of outputs. The architecture should be modified as plans and priorities change, ITS projects are implemented, and the ITS needs and services evolve in the state. ... The following sections define the key aspects of the process for the maintenance of the Kansas Statewide ITS Architecture.
For many transportation systems, the cost of expanding the infrastructure is too high. Therefore, engineers must shift their focus to improving the quality of transportation within the existing infrastructure. Focusing on highway and railway systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems: New Principles and Architectures provides a radically different
The Kansas Statewide ITS Plan is a strategic plan to deploy Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies throughout the state. ... This plan assesses the needs of Kansas for ITS and develops both short-term and long-term strategies for addressing those needs. ... Ultimately, this plan will establish the blueprint for a successful statewide ITS system.
Written for both technical and non-technical professionals involved in intelligent transportation system (ITS) development, this clear, systematic guide describes a practical approach to planning, developing, and implementing successful ITS architectures in regional settings. Based on the principles and methods they used to help create the recently developed US National ITS Architecture, the authors provide you with a solid understanding of each critical step involved in the regional ITS deployment process. You learn the key ingredients that make up an effective ITS mission statement, how to choose the best ITS technologies for a specific application, the components involved in developing an appropriate logical and physical architecture, and much more.
This booklet provides a general introduction to the National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture. The Architecture is the first step toward achieving the vision Congress put forth for ITS in 1991: a vision of a seamless, multimodal, national intelligent transportation system that would have a consistent character across the country. The following questions are addressed: What's the National Architecture Program really all about? What is the National Architecture? What does it do for ITS? How did a National Architecture develop? What does the National Architecture look like? What does the Architecture tell us? What happens next? Where can I get more information?
