In view of the dramatically increased interest in the study of grain boundaries during the past few years, the Physical Metal lurgy Committee of The Institute of Metals Division of The Metal lurgical Society, AIME, sponsored a four-session symposium on the NATURE AND BEHAVIOR OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, at the TMS-AIME Fall Meeting in Detroit, Michigan, October 18-19, 1971. The main ob jectives of this symposium were to examine the more recent develop ments, theoretical and experimental, in our understanding of grain boundaries, and to stimulate further studies in these and related areas. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Symposium. It is regrettable that space limitations allow the inclusion of only four of the unsolicited papers, in addition to thirteen invited papers. The papers are grouped into three sections according to their major content: STRUCTURE OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, ENERGETICS OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, and GRAIN BOUNDARY MOTION AND RELATED PHENOMENA. Grain boundaries, or crystal interfaces, have been of both academic and practical interest for many years. An early seminar on "Metal Interfaces" was documented in 1952 by ASM. The Fourth Metallurgical Colloquium held in France, 1960, had a broad coverage on "Properties of Grain Boundaries". More recently the Australian Institute of Metals sponsored a conference on interfaces, with the proceedings being published by Butterworths in 1969.
This book is a result of years and years of blogging my interaction with God as I worked my way through the pages of the New Testament. It gave me a joy unspeakable and full of glory. As I wrote I prayed for those who would read my words, especially my children, grandchildren and future generations.
Diffusion in Crystalline Solids addresses some of the most active areas of research on diffusion in crystalline solids. Topics covered include measurement of tracer diffusion coefficients in solids, diffusion in silicon and germanium, atom transport in oxides of the fluorite structure, tracer diffusion in concentrated alloys, diffusion in dislocations, grain boundary diffusion mechanisms in metals, and the use of the Monte Carlo Method to simulate diffusion kinetics. This book is made up of eight chapters and begins with an introduction to the measurement of diffusion coefficients with radioisotopes. The following three chapters consider diffusion in materials of substantial technological importance such as silicon and germanium. Atomic transport in oxides of the fluorite structure is described, and diffusion in concentrated alloys, including intermetallic compounds, is analyzed. The next two chapters delve into diffusion along short-circuiting paths, focusing on the effect of diffusion down dislocations on the form of the tracer concentration profile. The book also discusses the mechanisms of diffusion in grain boundaries in metals by invoking considerable work done on grain-boundary structure. The last two chapters are concerned with computer simulation, paying particular attention to machine calculations and the Monte Carlo method. The book concludes by exploring the fundamental atomic migration process and presenting some state-of-the-art calculations for defect energies and the topology of the saddle surface. Students and researchers of material science will find this book extremely useful.
Why are islanders so lavishly generous with food and material possessions but so guarded with information? Why do these people, unfailingly polite for the most part, laugh openly when others embarrass themselves? What does a smile mean to an islander? What might a sudden lapse into silence signify? These questions are common in encounters with an unfamiliar Pacific Island culture. Making Sense of Micronesia is intended for westerners who find themselves in contact with Micronesians—as teachers, social workers, health-care providers, or simply as friends—and are puzzled by their island ways. It is for anyone struggling to make sense of cultural exchanges they don’t quite understand. The author focuses on the guts of island culture: the importance of the social map, the tension between the individual and social identity, the ways in which wealth and knowledge are used, the huge importance of respect, emotional expression and its restraints, island ways of handling both conflict and intimacy, the real but indirect power of women. Far from a theoretical exposition, the book begins and ends with the real-life behavior of islanders. Each section of every chapter is introduced by a vignette that illustrates the theme discussed. The book attempts to explain island behavior, as curious as it may seem to outsiders at times, against the over-riding pattern of values and attitudes that have always guided island life. Even as the author maps the cultural terrain of Micronesia, he identifies those areas where island logic and the demands of the modern world conflict: the “dilemmas of development.” In some cases, changes are being made; in others, the very features of island culture that were highly functional in the past may remain so even today. Overall, he advocates restraint—in our judgments on island practices, in our assumption that many of these are dysfunctional, and in leading the charge for “development” before understanding the broader context of the culture we are trying to convert.
A WRITER, I GROW MY MIND IS OPEN TO NEW SO, WORDS DO NOW FLOW A POET, I GROW I AM OLD, SO FREE TO BE ANYTHING I KNOW AN ARTIST I BE MY MIND CLEARLY FORMULATES APPS PAINT, THE MIND DOES SEE I AM THE NEW OLD BLESSED BE MIND'S LONGEVITY IT STILL BURNS WHITE HOT THERE CAME A POINT, AFTER TURNING 82, THAT I REFLECTED ON THE QUESTION, DO PEOPLE REALLY KNOW ME? DO I REALLY UNDERSTAND, THUS, KNOW MYSELF? I DECIDED TO REFLECT, UNDERSTAND, AND EXPRESS WHO I AM THROUGH WHATEVER EXPRESSIVE VEHICLE THAT MOVES ME. AT FIRST IT WAS ONLY PROSE, BUT I SOON TURNED TO POETRY TO FLUSH OUT WHAT 1 WANTED TO SAY. ONE DAY WHILE WRITING I NOTICED THE FINGERPRINTS ON MY IPAD SCREEN. MORNING SUNLIGHT WAS STREAMING IN THE WINDOW AND ILLUMINATING THE FINGERPRINTS. I WAS CURIOUS TO SEE HOW APPS DESIGNED TO COLORIZE OLD B&W PHOTOS WOULD HANDLE THESE APPARENT B&W FINGERPRINTS. THIS KICKED IN MY CURIOSITY REGARDING WHAT I COULD CREATE USING ANY AND ALL DIGITAL IMAGE TOOLS AT MY DISPOSAL, MY CREATIVITY WAS STIMULATED AND AFTER A YEAR OF CREATING HAVE HUNDREDS OF DIGITALLY CREATED IMAGES THAT PLEASE ME. INCLUDE A FEW EARLY IMAGES IN THIS BOOK, WHAT IMPACT DO I HOPE THIS BOOK CREATES? AT A MINIMUM I HOPE WHEN MY FAMILY THINK OF ME, THEY UTILIZE THIS "SELF-REFLECTION" TO STIMULATE OR EVENTUALLY INTRODUCE MY ESSENCE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. I HOPE OTHERS THAT READ "SELF-REFLECTION", CONSIDER CREATING A SIMILAR GLIMPSE INTO THEIR ESSENCE TO EDIFY FUTURE GENERATIONS
