Numerous selections from Schumann's Album for the Young have long been favorites of intermediate students, and few collections fail to include the "Soldier's March," the "Happy Farmer" or the "Wild Horseman." This historically informed edition of the entire collection clearly differentiates the markings of the first edition from Clara Schumann's later-edited version. Discussions of ornamentation and the collection's origin are also included. The Alfred Masterwork Library CD Editions conveniently combine each exceptional volume with a professionally recorded CD that is sure to inspire artistic performances. Pianist Kim O'Reilly Newman holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois. She has performed throughout North America and Europe with the Hambro Quartet of Pianos and was an editor and recording pianist for Alfred Publishing. Kim is a brain tumor survivor and now specializes in performing music for the left hand.
"This collection of original pieces for beginning to intermediate students continues the tradition of well-known and similarly titled collections by Schumann, Khachaturian and other composers, except that this album concentrates solely on jazz, rock, pop, blues, boogie woogie, ragtime and easy listening pieces which reflect the popular music styles of today. In this book, the stylistically unique melodic turns, chord progressions and rhythmic anomalies of each style are taught in a fun way starting with easiest pieces. The pieces are ordered according to difficulty from easy to quite challenging, thus allowing students at a variety of levels to explore the variety of style encountered in everyday music."
Album For The Young features 64 classic Piano pieces inspired by the spirit of childhood. From Johannes Brahms’ unashamedly lyrical Wiegenlied through the more cerebral approach of Schumann’s album Für die Jugend and the works of contemporary composers such as Lutoslawksi and Richard Rodney Bennett, the music contained in this collection offers many contrasting approaches to the idea of music for the young. Great composers down the ages have been consistently attracted to writing albums about or for the young. Some pieces are suitable for children to play and some are drawn from the nostalgic memory of childhood innocence. Here is a unique collection to treasure, reflecting the variety of both their emotional approaches and the richness of their creative responses.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) and his wife Clara Wieck Schumann established a household centered almost entirely around music and their children. Inspired by his home life, which helped provide him with a mental stability that he struggled all his life to maintain, Schumann wrote a great deal of Hausmusik : modest, everyday music to be practiced and performed in the home. His first foray into this kind of literature, the Album for the Young, Op. 68, remains his most admired, even to this day. Includes audio recordings. Editor & recording artist: Jennifer Linn
The brilliant yet tortured Robert Schumann virtually launched the Romantic Era with his music, which conveyed the depths of his emotions through a unique blending of music and poetry. Nearly the entire Schumann catalogue is represented in this newly reissued edition.
