In India, the practice of jugaad—finding workarounds or hacks to solve problems—emerged out of subaltern strategies of negotiating poverty, discrimination, and violence but is now celebrated in management literature as a disruptive innovation. In Jugaad Time Amit S. Rai explores how jugaad operates within contemporary Indian digital media cultures through the use of the mobile phone. Rai shows that despite being co-opted by capitalism to extract free creative labor from the workforce, jugaad is simultaneously a practice of everyday resistance, as workers and communities employ hacks to oppose corporate, caste, and gender power. Locating the tensions surrounding jugaad—as both premodern and postdigital, innovative and oppressive—Rai maps how jugaad can be used to undermine neoliberal capitalist media ecologies and nationalist politics.

Yoga has offered the Indian state unprecedented opportunities for global, media-savvy political performance. In Flexible India, Shameem Black travels into unexpected realms of popular culture in English from India, its diaspora, and the West to explore and critique yoga as an exercise in cultural power. Drawing on her own experience and her readings of political spectacles, yoga murder mysteries, court cases, art installations, and digital media, Black shows how yoga’s imaginative power supports diverse political and cultural ends. Although many cultural practices in today’s India exemplify “culture wars” between liberal and conservative agendas, Flexible India argues that visions of yoga offer a “culture peace” that conceals, without resolving, such tensions. This flexibility allows states, corporations, and individuals to think of themselves as welcoming and tolerant while still, in many cases, supporting practices that make minority populations increasingly vulnerable. However, as Black shows, yoga can also be imagined in ways that offer new tools for critiquing hierarchical structures of power and race, Hindu nationalism, cultural appropriation, and self-help capitalism.

The public healthcare system in rural India is chronically under-resourced. It embodies and often perpetuates the wider politics of the Indian state towards its rural communities with provisions of care that are deeply entangled with violence and disgust. Policing as a global form is often fraught with excessive violence, corruption, and even criminalization. These sorts of problems are especially omnipresent in postcolonial nations such as India, where Beatrice Jauregui has spent several years studying the day-to-day lives of police officers in its most populous state, Uttar Pradesh. In this book, she offers an empirically rich and theoretically innovative look at the great puzzle of police authority in contemporary India and its relationship to social order, democratic governance, and security. Jauregui explores the paradoxical demands placed on Indian police, who are at once routinely charged with abuses of authority at the same time that they are asked to extend that authority into any number of both official and unofficial tasks. Her ethnography of their everyday life and work demonstrates that police authority is provisional in several senses: shifting across time and space, subject to the availability and movement of resources, and dependent upon shared moral codes and relentless instrumental demands. In the end, she shows that police authority in India is not simply a vulgar manifestation of raw power or the violence of law but, rather, a contingent and volatile social resource relied upon in different ways to help realize human needs and desires in a pluralistic, postcolonial democracy. "Disobedient Aesthetics examines emergent forms of creative civil disobedience that have arisen in response to digital tools of surveillance and control. Analyzing activities that defy-by hacking, subverting, or otherwise thwarting efforts to use the interface of our bodies and networked technologies-Disobedient Aesthetics theorizes the rhetorical and aesthetic character of such disobedient acts and the possibilities, limitations, and risks they pose for democratic participation. In recent decades, new tools of surveillance and control have become ubiquitous, among them security cameras, data mining in social media spaces, and biometric scanning. As such, we all now dwell in spaces of public, everyday life that entangle networked levers of control with the facticity of having bodies, DNA, or even faces in public. Each chapter probes a different aspect of our embodied experience as sites of data exploitation. The first chapter examines tactical interventions into the thermal vision systems used on military drones. Human body heat itself is transformed into a media object and a source of data for lethal drone systems. In the following chapter, we encounter extraordinarily sophisticated facial recognition platforms that are turning our very faces into actionable data mines. The next chapter examines two kinds of on-demand DNA analysis, at-home testing, like that used by 23andMe, and a related police practice, to show what's at stake when the hunger for personal data dives all the way into our genetic makeup. The next chapter considers how surveillance and control has come to change urban governance, and with it the physical space of publicness itself. Data-driven governance, paired with home "sharing" platforms like AirBNB apply even more pressure on populations, and have engendered new predictive forms of policing and new architectural forms, such as anti-homeless spikes in public spaces. The final chapter examines several different creative, critical, and collective efforts to democratize access to the technical knowledge needed to intervene in the control systems addressed in the prior chapters. A concluding epilogue revisits current theories and manifestations of "control," and offers an alternative reading of Gilles Deleuze's oft-cited thesis on control societies-namely, that with control, it is not a matter of escaping it, but a matter of "finding new weapons" to undermine its functions. All of the projects and activities surveyed here do indeed attempt that, but the epilogue meditates on an alternative to finding new "weapons," in the search for new "tactics."
