Excerpt from Journal of a Tour to Niagara Falls: In the Year 1805 This Journal of a Tour to Niagara Falls, now for the first time printed, was lost sight of for many years. Several months ago, an antiquarian friend brought it to me, saying it had been accidentally found among some papers recently examined by a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Through the good offices of my friend, and by the kindness of a relative to whose family the papers referred to belonged, it has been given to me, coupled only with the suggestion that I should print it; a suggestion with which I feel it my duty to comply. And I do this willingly, both as a tribute of respect to the memory of an honored ancestor, and because the Journal itself, written more than seventy years ago, cannot fail to be instructive and interesting at the present time. It throws light on the condition of a section of our country, then almost a wilderness, now teeming with population. Description: Travel journal attributed to Catherine Scollay, written while on a trip from Boston, Massachusetts to Niagara Falls, New York, 14 June-29 July 1825. Entries describe the voyage through Massachusetts; the landscape; stops en route; towns, taverns, and inns patronized; and sights seen. The journal was written as a narrative in three volumes, with some repetition, and seems to include a draft and a final version. Formerly attributed to Dr. Jacob Bigelow and to Margaret Scollay Bigelow.
