"Scenes of Negro life in New Orleans, Georgia, and New York. The heroine, after passing as white, decides to return to her own people." Cf. Hanna, A. Mirror for the nation
In 1943, Jerald C. McIntire is supposed to die in a grenade explosion in the Ardennes forest in World War II. He miraculously survives, but from that point on Jerry no longer needs to eat or sleep, he has no emotions, and he never ages. After several suicide attempts, Jerry discovers he can't die. But how is this possible? Nearly twenty years after his first brush with death, Jerry learns that he somehow broke the realm of the natural order. Even God Himself isn't sure how it happened, but Jerry is the only man ever born without a soul. The archangel Michael informs him that in the Soul War, good and evil are bound by certain laws and honor checks. Jerry, however, is bound by nothing and can therefore serve as the Master's Centurion-an agent of God bestowed with the name Jericho. Jericho roams the streets of New York City, keeping order between the agents of Heaven and Hell, the angelus and the demonata. When a rogue deity, an ancient Hittite dragon god, comes to Earth and begins preying on both angels and demons, Jericho must step in to maintain the balance. But he stumbles into a much larger plot-one that threatens to irreparably damage the Balance of the Soul War and end all things.
Royal Highness is the delightfully ironic tale of a small, decadent German duchy and its invigoration by the intellect and values of an independent-minded American woman. Peopled with a range of characters from aristocrat to artisan, Royal Highness provides a microcosmic view of Europe before the Great War.
An account of Tom Fould's career, from the day when as a lad he and his parents sailed for Australia, until, still in the prime of youth, he meets his doom.
Covers the film careers of five screenwriters, who were crime and mystery writers for the famous Black mask pulp magazine. Also shows how these five writers applied their pulp writing expertise to the movies.
When something happens that shatters a life beyond recognition, what becomes of the soul? Trapped in a gilded cage for as long as she can remember, Hannah has tried to escape numerous times, in countless ways. She's been told all along that there's something wrong with her, something that her doctors can't diagnose. But what is life without freedom? Hannah would rather die than stay imprisoned forever. Another escape, once more the door slams shut with her locked behind it. Then Trevor offers her a way out, one that might actually mean permanent liberation for her. But at what cost? Trevor doesn't know the truth about her. Despite her fear that he'll be like all the others and turn away from her in horror, she longs to share her secret with him. Trevor has worked hard to make up for all the mistakes he's made in his life. Helping Hannah feels like the right thing to do – more than anything else he's ever done. But, to free her, the risks he takes asks more of him than he thought possible. After all, enemies aren't only outside in the world. Some are inside us… we just don’t know it…
