Woodland Creek Series. 30 Authors. 30 Shifter Stories. http://woodlandcreekseries.com/ She always did have a sassy mouth...just his type... Alice Grey thought life was easier when she was still a thief. As a flying squirrel shifter, it had always been as easy as gliding through some rich guy's open window and sailing away before the hounds could get a sniff of her. That was ten years ago, and she's still trying to escape her past, and the memories of the man who told her to run... Alice is reformed now. She doesn't live that life anymore. She hadn't wanted it to begin with. Forced into it to pay her father's debts to some very bad people, she still can't live peacefully because the dog shifters, one in particular, don't know when to quit. They catch up with her in Woodland Creek, hoping to clamp their teeth down on her neck and shake her until she's dead like a real squirrel. Jake Redfield, former undercover cop, fell in love with Alice when he met her on the job. He'd been trying to bring down her bosses at the time, and for the most part, he succeeded, but one man is out of prison, and he wants revenge as much as Jake wants to see her again. Wants to touch her and kiss her. Keep her safe. As a diamondback rattlesnake shifter, his venom can be deadly, and anyone who tries to hurt his Alice is just begging to be bitten... Paranormal romance, urban fantasy, protective hero, alpha male romance

Detecting Men examines the history of the Hollywood detective genre and the ways that detective films have negotiated changing social attitudes toward masculinity, heroism, law enforcement, and justice. Genre film can be a site for the expression and resolution of problematic social issues, but while there have been many studies of such other male genres as war films, gangster films, and Westerns, relatively little attention has been paid to detective films beyond film noir. In this volume, Philippa Gates examines classical films of the thirties and forties as well as recent examples of the genre, including Die Hard, the Lethal Weapon films, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Murder by Numbers, in order to explore social anxieties about masculinity and crime and Hollywood's conceptions of gender. Up until the early 1990s, Gates argues, the primary focus of the detective genre was the masculinity of the hero. However, from the mid-1990s onward, the genre has shifted to more technical portrayals of crime scene investigation, forensic science, and criminal profiling, offering a reassuring image of law enforcement in the face of violent crime. By investigating the evolution of the detective film, Gates suggests, perhaps we can detect the male.
Jake Dee is your average private detective. Finding lost items, doing background checks, not getting himself murdered, the usual. Except he’s an independent wizard in a world of Covens that will not tolerate his existence if they ever find him out. One spring day at sunset, he sees an angel fall right in front of him. She’s everything he ever wanted in a leading lady: beautiful, cold and probably dangerous. He immediately elects himself to protect her, whether from demons who want a fight or his best friend, Lucifer Morningstar, the First of the Fallen and a terrible flirt. Finding her shoeless and homeless, he takes her to his apartment. She’s new to Earth and has a lot to learn, and Jake’s the one who’s more than willing to teach her. So what sparks will fly between a boy with a private license and a girl with black wings?
You want a plot summary? OK. It's the story of Thor (not that dreamy Chris Hemsworth) or the love child of Elvis and Mickey Spillane or the Godfather's son in witness protection. It's a satirical view of society from the hooded eyes of the Last of the Real Men Private Investigators! A parody of the hard-boiled, film noir detective genre, it murderizes pop icons and trends past and present that really need murderizing.
Jake Collin, a modern day cowboy in western Montana, "was" the town's most wooed after "hunk-of-hunks", until a stranger wandered into town, Nan, who had sexy and friendly dialed up to a full blown 10+. Jake & Nan married, and at the start, life was peaches & cream... until lately. Nan did a 180 change, took up residence on the living room couch, and now does nothing except bitch, eat, brood, watch TV... but supplies extra helpings of rolling in the hay. Truth is, Nan is a behaviorally modified clone, sent to coerce Jake into a very large illicit placer gold mining deal. Nan's 180 is a malfunction in her microchip implants... caused by her human instincts of love for Jake, and life away from her creator. A wild plant growing in the Amazon is at the story's root. The plant IS the tree of life... cures everything... and makes cloning humans easy. "The Creator", the story's top evil genius, holds the secret of the plants location from the world, and uses its powers to perpetuate his business ventures... like cloning suicide bombers with explosives implanted into their bodies that can be telepathically implemented. The free world wants the Amazon plant and to end The Creators business. Jake's Couchwife is the catalyst for that end because her human side for true love battles against The Creator's controls. This gives NSA spies clues for operations which saves Jake's life, but he violently loses everything, except his mother's will, His old girlfriend Eda, and a miraculous new life that includes farming the Amazon plant for humanity.
Jake Tromp's wife has left him. But he still has his guns. He makes do, operating as a private eye from a second-floor office, next to a prostitute's parlour. What else is an old South African to do in a new country? Tromp chooses his clients unwisely. Like the man who instructs him to kidnap a shady businessman's daughter. Only, is it the right girl Tromp and his fumbling assistant Frikkie capture? Soon they shackled with two kidnapped girls, one of whom is more street-savvy than Tromp and Frikkie put together. Not only does the sassy lass hit it off with Omo, her Nigerian keeper, she also starts managing her own kidnapping. From Florida her rich Cuban dady - believing Fidel Castro to be behind everyting - send two heavies to find his girl. Soon, Cubans are crawling all over Cape Town. Or are they? Tromp, who has been known to try as a few tricks of his own, condidently plays the two sides against each other. When he's hired to track down the very girls he kidnapped, life becomes really complicated. And when the police get wind of the whole thing, there's no end to the confusion. Tromp's Last Stand, a comical romp through the Cape Town underworld, is very unlike the conventional speeding, gun-toting, girl-grabbing crime novel. In these delightfully irreverent pages you should rather expect slow-motion car chases, raids that backfire and girls that don't want to be rescued.
