Pp. 44-48, "The Primitive Within: The Question of Race in Epstein's Career, 1917-1929," by Elizabeth Barker, examines the factor of antisemitism and racial prejudice in the criticism of Jacob Epstein's (1880-1959) sculpture, especially in the period following World War I which saw a rise in antisemitism in Great Britain. Gives examples of references to Epstein's "racial art, " his preference for the primitive, attacks on his art as an example of an international Jewish conspiracy in the arts, and his unsuitability as a Jew to portray Christian themes.
