As a Soviet-style collapse unfolds in America, Grayson, equal parts philosopher and warrior but legitimately neither, makes a death-bed promise to watch over a couple with a child on the way. Driven by his own severe loss, he must make good on his promise, and carry the psychic consequences as he races headlong into the fallout of our imploding civilization. Set in the hallucinatory desert southwest, populated with hunter-killer teams, awash with refugees, third-country mercenaries, and hostile, conspiring elites, King of Dogs pits the beauty of language and western philosophical ideals against the deep depravity and violent decay of our times.Balancing elements of the apocalyptic, epic and crime sub-genres with more ambitious, literary sentence-to-sentence writing and substructure, King of Dogs will appeal to readers who enjoy the aesthetics of Cormac McCarthy, as well as those who appreciate the challenge and reward found in writers as diverse as Joseph Conrad, Charles Bowden, and David Milch. Andrew Edwards was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He currently lives in Montana with his girlfriend and dog. In addition to writing novels, short non-fiction and stories, he has worked as a survival instructor, ranch hand, tradesman, and professional driver. David Milch (DEADWOOD, LUCK), has called Edwards' fiction "excellent," and Lauren Groff (FLORIDA, ARCADIA) has said he is a "clear and wonderful talent." "The circus is in town, and on the planet Boon, that's big, potentially riotous news. The delicate, decaying political balance maintained by the cloned human grands at the expense of the uplifted dog and cat populations is in danger of toppling under the influence of mysterious forces both outer and inner. When Gio Barbaro--clone descendant of one of Boon's ancient leaders, junior Senator, known friend to dogs and secret iconoclast--is recruited by the ringmaster cat, Scratch, he's knowingly going against everything his family and class believes in. The question, though, is what Gio believes in"--
'The Call of the Wild' is the story of Buck, a domestic dog stolen, sold as a sled dog and forced to endure the brutal work and competition with the other dogs to be leader of the pack. 'White Fang' presents a similar story but in reverse as a wild wolf-dog mix is domesticated but faces great cruelty before finding a master.
The King of Mazy May is a short story by Jack London. John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 - November 22, 1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. He is best remembered as the author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction expos The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. On July 12, 1897, London (age 21) and his sister's husband Captain Shepard sailed to join the Klondike Gold Rush. This was the setting for some of his first successful stories. London's time in the Klondike, however, was detrimental to his health.
Ever had to sit next to someone unpleasant on the bus for a long time? Did they stare at you for the whole journey without blinking, whilst extracting a reluctant object from their nose? And did they smell bad? Well, he's in the story. Can you imagine what it would be like to have a cat sink its claws into your neck whilst it gnawed into your throat? He's in the book too. These and other similar issues are just some of the situations encountered by detectives as they dig up the dirt investigating a kidnapping. As they prepare to interview acquaintances of the suspect (Jack King) where they would compare times and places, they couldn't possibly have prepared themselves for the insane people they were about to meet. The first of these was 'the guy from the bus, ' a little retarded and would make the detectives earn their pay to get any sense out of him. He also had a whimsical habit of blowing his house up, lets hope the detectives don't go inside. Enter vicious red haired brute. This was the local neighbour and extra from Lord of the Rings and her name was Laurel. Finally the detectives would have to deal with the elderly eccentric relatives who'd lost more than their marbles. Meanwhile Jack King blissfully unaware of any wrong doing, carried on with his usual routine in life. Lately that consisted of chasing a white rabbit through countless gardens, fighting large cat with one hand, ogling at beautiful girls in pyjamas or nurses, before the police came after him. But all this would pale into insignificance when he went to hospital and was accosted by woman assassin with gun as he lay naked on the bed.
