This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa, exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora, with a complex history, including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa, and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots, and have often created a romanticized image of Italy, mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society, currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity. Interdisciplinary by design, this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general. This volume focuses on a longing projected mostly toward the past (mal d’Afrique) alongside a longing toward the future (afro-optimism), and the different manifestations, shifting meanings, and potential points of contact of these two stances. The volume introduces a new perspective into the discussion of Somalia in Italian Studies. This is an intersectional work of Italian Studies scholarship, whose contributors help re-imagine the field and its relationship to Somalia with their diverse backgrounds, unique insights, and global breadth. The book integrates the current scholarship on Somalia with the most recent theoretical studies on nostalgia, visionary affect, colonial ruins, silenced archives, melancholy, ecology, food and diaspora, classical studies and performativity, storytelling, afro-fabulation and queer literature, media and humanitarianism, and afro optimism. The recent histories of Italy and Somalia are closely linked. Italy colonized Somalia from the end of the 19th century to 1941, and held the territory by UN mandate from 1950 to 1960. Italy is also among the destination countries of the Somali diaspora, which increased in 1991 after civil war. Nonetheless, this colonial and postcolonial cultural encounter has often been neglected. Critically evaluating Gilles Deleuze and F?x Guattari?s concept of ?minor literature?, as well as drawing on postcolonial literary studies, The Somali Within analyses the processes of linguistic and cultural translation and self-translation, the political engagement with race, gender, class and religious discrimination, and the complex strategies of belonging and unbelonging at work in the literary works in Italian by authors of Somali origins. Brioni proposes that the ?minor? Somali Italian connection might offer a major insight into the transnational dimension of contemporary ?Italian? literature and ?Somali? culture.
