This book has two main subjects. One is Dialogue among Civilizations; the other is Civil Society. By Dialogue among Civilizations, President Khatami highlights the significance of culture in international relations as a new paradigm. Such an approach delineates how civilizations can engage in fruitful Dialogue with one another, rather than negating or being absorbed by each other.

The Islamic world, often regarded as an anathema to civil society, in fact has rich traditions of associational life pursuing “common good”. These religious resources have been reinterpreted for the enhancement of civic virtues and participatory politics in contemporary context, that is, democratization. Such pioneering efforts have been clearly observable in Muslim Southeast Asia. In November 1999, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation invited ten Muslim activists and scholars from the region to Japan for exchanging views and experiences among themselves and with Japanese participants. Here their papers and discussions are compiled into a book, Islam and Civil Society in Southeast Asia.
Die Reihe MAECENATA SCHRIFTEN ist eine interdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Buchreihe zur Zivilgesellschaftsforschung. In die Reihe können Qualifikationsarbeiten ebenso aufgenommen werden wie Studien, Ergebnisse von Forschungsprojekten, Tagungsbände oder Gutachten. Die Reihe steht grundsätzlich jeder Autorin und jedem Autor offen; ein unmittelbarer Arbeitsbezug zum Maecenata Institut für Philanthropie und Zivilgesellschaft ist nicht erforderlich. Veröffentlichungen sind in deutscher und englischer Sprache möglich. In der Regel ist für eine Veröffentlichung ein Druckkostenzuschuss erforderlich. Rupert Graf Strachwitz studierte Politikwissenschaft, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte in den USA und in München, ist seit über 30 Jahren ehren- und hauptamtlich, beratend, forschend und lehrend mit Zivilgesellschaft, bürgerschaftlichem Engagement, Philanthropie und Stiftungswesen befasst. Er war Mitglied der Enquete-Kommission „Zukunft des bürgerschaftlichen Engagements" des Deutschen Bundestags. Er ist Direktor des Maecenata-Instituts für Philanthropie und Zivilgesellschaft, Berlin. Dr. sc. Eckhard Priller studierte Soziologie und Ökonomie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und war seit 1992 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB). Von 2008 bis 2014 leitete er dort die Projektgruppe Zivilengagement, die u.a. 2009 den „Bericht zur Lage und zu den Perspektiven des bürgerschaftlichen Engagements in Deutschland" erstellt hat. Eckhard Priller ist wissenschaftlicher Co-Direktor des Maecenata Instituts für Philanthropie und Zivilgesellschaft. Dr. Siri Hummel ist stv. Direktorin des Maecenata Instituts für Philanthropie und Zivilgesellschaft und ist Politik- und Kommunikationswissenschaftlerin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Demokratie und Zivilgesellschaft, sowie Gleichstellung in der Zivilgesellschaft und Stiftungsforschung. Zusätzlich ist sie Lehrbeauftragte im Studiengang Nonprofit Management and Public Governance an der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht. Vor ihrer Arbeit bei Maecenata war Siri von 2011-2017 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald. 2018 promovierte sie an der Universität Greifswald zum Thema Demokratieförderung durch Stiftungen.
One of the most dynamic aspects of the Islamic revival during the past two centuries has been the rethinking of Islamic political thought. A broad range of actors, ideas, and ideologies characterize the debate on how Islamic ethics and law should be manifested in modern institutions. Yet this aspect of the "return to Islam" has been neglected by policymakers, the media, and even many scholars, who equate "political Islam" with merely one strand, labeled "Islamic fundamentalism." Bringing together ten essays from six volumes of the Ethikon Series in Comparative Ethics, this book gives a rounded treatment to the subject of Islamic political ethics. The authors explore the Islamic ethics of civil society, boundaries, pluralism, and war and peace. The chapters on war and peace take up such crucial and timely issues as the Islamic ethics of jihad, examining both the legitimate conditions for the declaration of war and the proper conduct of war. In their discussions, the contributors analyze the works of classical writers as well as the full range of modern reinterpretations. But beyond these analyses of previous and contemporary thinkers, the essays also reach back to the two fundamental sources of Islamic ethics--the Qur'an and traditions of the Prophet--to develop fresh insights into how Islam and Muslims can contribute to human society in the twenty-first century. Anti-Muslim voices have become louder in many places in the midst of ongoing atrocities undertaken in the name of Islam. As a result, much of the creative participation of Western Muslims in the public sphere has become overshadowed. This tendency is not only visible in political discussions and the media landscape, but it is also often reflected in academia where research about Muslims in the West is predominantly shaped by the post 9/11 narrative. In contrast, European Muslims Transforming the Public Sphere offers a paradigm shift. It puts forward a new approach to understanding minority public engagement, suggesting that we need to go beyond conceptualisations that look at Muslims in the West mainly through the minority lens. By bringing into dialogue minority-specific and non-minority specific concepts, the book offers a relevant complement. Using young German Muslims engaged in media, the arts and culture and civil society as ten case studies, this book utilises the concepts of counterpublics and participatory culture to re-examine Muslims' engagement within the European public sphere. It presents a qualitative analysis, which has resulted from two years of ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation, in-depth interviews and primary source analysis of material produced by the research participants. This book is a unique insight into the outworking of multiculturalism in Western Europe. It illustrates the many-sidedness of young Muslims’ public contributions, revealing how they transform European public spheres in different ways. In the face of Islam's own internal struggles, it is not easy to see who we should support and how. This report provides detailed descriptions of subgroups, their stands on various issues, and what those stands may mean for the West. Since the outcomes can matter greatly to international community, that community might wish to influence them by providing support to appropriate actors. The book evaluates on-going ethical conversations to learn how emotional communication is received, teachings are internalized, and a religious world-view is brought to life. Exploring how religious values saturate people’s consciousness to induce subtle shifts in moral and ethical sensibilities, this book is about people’s practices that illuminate how Islam is lived. Based on fieldwork conducted in Ankara between 2010 and 2016, the study enquires into people’s ethical, religious, and moral motivations through the use of the ethnographic method and "thick description". Conversations and interviews with officials, community leaders, students, entrepreneurs, professionals, and blue-collar workers were subjected to close scrutiny to foreground societal change and churning. To capture perspectives absent or deliberately overlooked in mainstream public discourse and scholarship, fieldwork was conducted in locations ranging from homes, offices, and university dorms to the shrines of saints. In listening closely to how people talk about their religious practices, the book addresses the question of how Islamic subjectivities are being forged in Turkey. The study unveils how people are pushed to re-think old practices and attitudes in the process of reinterpreting Islam in light of contemporary concerns. Filling a gap in the literature where micro-level, grounded analyses of culture and society are relatively rare, this book is a key resource for readers interested in the anthropology of religion and gender, ethnography, Turkey, and the Middle East.
The public self-presentation of individuals and groups in terms grounded in Islamic traditions bears in important ways on matters of civil society and the public sphere in both Muslim-majority and Western countries.
