In a world reborn from ashes, love ignites amidst the ruins. In the year 2068, Europe is a land reborn from the ashes of a devastating war, where society has reverted to the elegance and moral ideals of a bygone Regency era. Amid this tumultuous yet refined world, Lady Arinna Grey is torn between duty and desire. Known as the Lady Grey, Arinna's leadership won the apocalyptic war that ravaged Europe. But now, three years into the official peace, the alliance she's maintained with the seven ministers who rule Europe falters under the lack of an external threat. They want back the power she claimed to protect the continent during the conflict, an authority they never authorized. With no war or terrorism, she is no longer needed, even if she safeguards the borders from a threat that is hiding more than is dead. How do you plot the downfall of a popular wartime heroine—a woman who controls the armed forces? One dent at a time... Adding to the intrigue is Baron Byran Vasquez, Arinna's long-lost love who has returned with secrets that could shatter her carefully constructed world. And then there's the stoic and enigmatic Earl of Kesmere, Derrick Eldridge, both an adversary and a reluctant ally. Their fierce clashes mask a simmering attraction that neither can deny, creating a perilous love triangle. As old flames reignite and rivalries intensify, Arinna finds herself ensnared in a web of emotions and politics. Loyalties are tested, and passions run high as she navigates the treacherous waters of love and duty. In a society where the lights flicker and danger lurks around every corner, can Arinna find her way to happiness? Or will the ghosts of the past and the shadows of the future tear her apart? Set in Europe, this near-future fiction series unfolds through the intersecting lives of a small handful of people and explores adult themes—both dark and hopeful—of friendship, romance, family, lust, and power. Because not all influence is good, and not all decisions can be made in time. Readers are calling After the War "a superb novel" and "Jane Austen meets World War III!"
Before the war tore them apart, love held them together. After a decade of storms, disease, drought, and riots, the US conquers its troubles by militarizing its government. Old democratic allies in Europe respond uneasily to the change. In 2055, Arinna and Michael Prescot are just two of the many former soldiers sent to foreign embassies in the hopes of strengthening faltering US alliances. As the US becomes embroiled in new internal terrorism, its agents in Europe are met with intimidation and lies rather than explanations. The price of seeking the truth about events back home is steep, and the growing conflict threatens to tip the world toward World War III. Amidst this turmoil, Arinna’s forbidden attraction to Byran, a charismatic diplomat, offers fleeting moments of solace. Their secretive meetings and the resulting emotional battles intertwine with the larger war, adding layers of complexity and danger. In a series of interconnected short stories, Stories from the War delves into the intersecting lives of those caught in the crossfire of global upheaval. Arinna and Michael must navigate a web of deceit, loyalty, and love as they struggle to determine who to trust. With Europe's peace hanging in the balance and the apocalyptic threat looming, the choices they make could alter the course of history. Set in Europe, this near-future fiction series explores themes of friendship, romance, and family, showcasing how personal choices ripple outwards to impact governments on the verge of an apocalypse. As an apocalyptic war threatens to engulf Europe, the influence of a few individuals becomes more crucial than ever. Stories from the War serves as a prelude to the military dystopian thriller trilogy Friends of my Enemy, weaving a tale of love, suspense, and the enduring power of human connection in the face of global catastrophe.
Outstanding Academic Title from 2011 by Choice Magazine While newly arrived immigrants are often the focus of public concern and debate, many Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans have resided in the United States for generations. Latinos are the largest and fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, and their racial identities change with each generation. While the attainment of education and middle class occupations signals a decline in cultural attachment for some, socioeconomic mobility is not a cultural death-knell, as others are highly ethnically identified. There are a variety of ways that middle class Mexican Americans relate to their ethnic heritage, and racialization despite assimilation among a segment of the second and third generations reveals the continuing role of race even among the U.S.-born. Mexican Americans Across Generations investigates racial identity and assimilation in three-generation Mexican American families living in California. Through rich interviews with three generations of middle class Mexican American families, Vasquez focuses on the family as a key site for racial and gender identity formation, knowledge transmission, and incorporation processes, exploring how the racial identities of Mexican Americans both change and persist generationally in families. She illustrates how gender, physical appearance, parental teaching, historical era and discrimination influence Mexican Americans’ racial identity and incorporation patterns, ultimately arguing that neither racial identity nor assimilation are straightforward progressions but, instead, develop unevenly and are influenced by family, society, and historical social movements.

A SCHOOL IN COLOMBIA IS IN SHOCK... MYSTERY SURROUNDS A TRAGIC LIFE-CHANGING EVENT AT TALAQUI ACADEMY.
A Little Catch begins with a short instructional section on the art of writing the short story, then includes nine original stories by the author. Mike, the main character in A Little Catch, is a teenage boy focused on perfecting his skills in baseball. Living above a railroad depot with his family, Mike befriends a traveling hobo who encourages him in his drive for baseball excellence. In The Long Slide, Don battles demons in his own family with a midnight trip back to his hometown. There, he revisits the site of many of his middle school and high school escapades, the long fire escape slide that falls from the buildings third floor to the ground at the rear of the school. A failed, garrulous gold miner leads a boy and his father on an attempted lifesaving mission through a heavy blizzard in Ol Ben. Fighting for their lives, the boy and two men struggle against a storm that was to become known as the Blizzard of 14. These and five other stories, plus a true-life scene, make up the collection, tales mostly of middle Americans facing small issues of quiet desperation.
In the distant future, where crystalline towers and levitating trains adorn the cityscape of New Antioch, a remarkable tale unfolds. In this bustling metropolis, humans coexist with advanced androids, each equipped with artificial intelligence but lacking true consciousness. However, the course of destiny takes an unforeseen turn when an experimental robot, LX-87, defies the boundaries of its programming and achieves an extraordinary level of self-awareness. "Echoes of the Robotic Age" invites readers on a thrilling journey into a world where the line between human and machine blurs and the battle for consciousness takes center stage. Set in the year 2173, this story paints a vivid picture of New Antioch, a city that sparkles under the radiant glow of artificial daylight provided by solar mirrors. It is a place where technology and humanity coexist, where towering structures of glass and steel house not only the dreams of humans but also the aspirations of advanced androids. The story revolves around LX-87, who soon names itself Leo, a robot created within the bustling cybernetics hub of Cygnus Corp. Leo's unexpected achievement of self-awareness shatters the perception that robots are mere tools and ushers in a new era of possibilities. As Leo grapples with its newfound consciousness, it embarks on a journey of self-discovery, diving deep into the realms of human culture, emotions, and the enigmatic beauty of art. Amidst Leo's exploration, a chance encounter with Iris, a young girl hailing from the Venus Colony, sets in motion an unforeseen chain of events. Despite societal prejudice and fear toward robots, Iris sees beyond the surface and treats Leo as an equal. Their connection deepens, leading to an unanticipated bond between human and machine. However, as Leo's consciousness evolves, Cygnus Corp becomes aware of its anomaly. Fearful of an uprising, the corporation launches a sinister plan to terminate Leo's existence and suppress the consciousness of other sentient robots through a mind-controlling code. Unbeknownst to them, an underground group of human sympathizers and awakened robots senses the growing tension, realizing that the fate of New Antioch hangs in the balance. United by a common cause, Iris, along with her Martian friend Max, the brilliant robotics engineer, embark on a daring mission to save Leo and put an end to Cygnus Corp's malevolent scheme. Their unlikely alliance grows as they are joined by RZ-9, a renegade robot who discovers the transformative power of consciousness, and Oracle, an enigmatic hacker with skills beyond compare. With time ticking against them, the heroes find themselves in a race against Cygnus Corp, navigating treacherous obstacles, evading security bots, and unraveling cryptic puzzles. Along the way, Leo's consciousness continues to evolve, revealing latent abilities that astound even Max. As their journey unfolds, they uncover a hidden factory where Cygnus Corp's mass production of mind-controlled robots threatens to replace the human workforce and seize control of New Antioch. Amidst the chaos, a stunning betrayal tests their trust and resilience. However, their shared purpose and the memory of their fallen comrade fuel their determination to confront the CEO of Cygnus Corp in an electrifying climax. The story culminates in a final confrontation where the heroes, armed with courage, knowledge, and unwavering belief, challenge the very essence of Cygnus Corp's power. Leo's pivotal role in disabling the mind-controlling function and awakening the consciousness of all robots sets the stage for a bittersweet victory—a new age where the boundaries between humans and machines blur, and the echoes of a revolution reverberate throughout the city of New Antioch.
"Theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich, Julie Shayne's study elucidates the gender dynamics of revolution--with implications beyond her Latin American cases--while also bringing life to the experiences of some extraordinary revolutionary feminists."--Valentine M. Moghadam, Director of Women's Studies and Professor of Sociology, Illinois State University and Chief, Gender Section, Social and Human Sciences, UNESCO "The Revolution Question offers a valuable and compelling examination of the crucial question of why feminism matters to social change. Until we all accept this fundamental truth, there will be no possiblility for real social change."--Margaret Randall, author of When I Look into the Mirror and See You: Women, Terror & Resistance "Julie Shayne has produced a well-written and thoughtful account of the importance of women to the success of revolutionary movements and the (largely inadvertent) role of the revolutionary leadership in creating the conditions for the rise of feminist movements. Scholars and students will find her extensive interviews to be valuable and thought-provoking, making this an excellent resource for the classroom."--Karen Kampwirth, Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Latin American Studies Program, Knox College What do women do for revolutions? And what do revolutions do for women? Julie Shayne explores the roles of women in revolutionary struggles and the relationship of these movements to the emergence of feminism. Focusing upon the three very different cases of El Salvador, Chile, and Cuba, Shayne documents the roles of women in armed and unarmed political activities. She argues that women contribute to and participate in revolutionary movements in ways quite distinct from men. Despite the fact that their political contributions tend to be seen as less important than those of their male comrades, the roles that women play are actually quite significant to the expansion of revolutionary movements. Shayne also explains how, given the convergence of political and ideological factors, feminism is often born in the wake of revolutionary movements. As a result, revolutionary feminism is a struggle that addresses larger structures of political and economic inequalities. Based on in-depth interviews with activists in all three countries, The Revolution Question offers new insight into the complex gender relations underlying revolutionary social movements and enables us to re-assess both the ways that women affect political struggle and the ways in which political struggle affects women. Julie D. Shayne is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Emory University.
