Aquella memorable iniciativa de Eugenio Espejo de publicar el 5 de enero de 1792, en las postrimerías del régimen colonial, Primicias de la cultura de Quito, el inicio del periodismo en el Ecuador, fue replicada treinta y seis años después en Cuenca, cuando fray Vicente Solano puso a circular El Eco del Asuay (sic), el primer periódico que salió a la luz en nuestra, aún balbuciente, vida republicana. Era el domingo 13 de enero de 1828, días en los que bullían las ambiciones y tambaleaba la Gran Colombia. Se trataba de un impreso en folio de cuatro páginas a dos columnas de edición clara y limpia y en cuya primera página ostentaba un epígrafe tomado de una frase de Rousseau que decía: Ce n´est pas assez de dire aux citoyens: soyez bons; il faut leur apprendre à l´être. (No basta decir a los ciudadanos: sed buenos; es necesario enseñarles a serlo). Era evidente que en la naciente república corrían nuevos aires: los ideales de la Ilustración habían permeado en la mentalidad de los nuevos líderes de la sociedad. This book takes a new, critical, and multidisciplinary look at experiences and meanings of social intervention in different social contexts, taking the approaches of social constructionism as a theoretical approach. The volume collects the results of theoretical-practical experiences that social science professionals with critical and constructionist visions linked to social work intervention have carried out in different spaces. It considers the way social work intervention models are built, their foundation, and their application. It provides the findings on tested intervention models built according to the basis of social constructionism in specific social scenarios, providing interesting findings that show intervention alternatives beyond traditional approaches. The social intervention strategies discussed take place in diverse situations, including health recovery and reconstruction in breast cancer, family abandonment issues of institutionalized adolescents, institutional care of refugee families, women caregivers of children with disabilities, men who exercise violence, and more.

Although semiotics has, in one guise or another, ftourished uninterruptedly since pre Socratic times in the West, and important semiotic themes have emerged and devel oped independently in both the Brahmanie and Buddhistic traditions, semiotics as an organized undertaking began to 100m only in the 1960s. Workshops materialized, with a perhaps surprising spontaneity, over much ofEurope-Eastern and Western and in North America. Thereafter, others quickly surfaced almost everywhere over the litera te globe. Different places strategically allied themselves with different lega eies, but all had a common thrust: to aim at a general theory of signs, by way of a description of different sign systems, their comparative analysis, and their classifi cation. More or less permanent confederations were forged with the most diverse academic disciplines, and amazingly varied frameworks were devised-suited to the needs of the times and the sites-to carry the work of consolidation forward. Bit by bit, mutually supportive international networks were put together. Today, it can truly be asserted that semiotics has become a global enterprise. This, of course, is far from saying that the map is uniform or even that world-wide homogeneity is in the least desirable. While our conjoint ultimate goal remains steadily in focus, the multiplicity of avenues available for its realization is inherent in the advent ure of the search itself.
