No doubt the failure of charity which bore fruit in the organization and perpetuation of dissenting bodies did not occur altogether on one side. The hierarchy of bygone days did not always regard the principle of striving not to quench a smoking flax, and employed methods which savoured of external tyranny. But the faith and order of the Church is divine, constituting a "sacred deposit" which is "incapable of compromise or surrender." 1 Accordingly, while charity must be restored, the only road to visible unity is along the ancient paths of the Catholic Church and religion. When the Christian world becomes persuaded of this, visible unity will become possible, and not before. 18. The position of liberalism which we have been considering is narrow to a degree, and would not be mistaken for breadth, if men were in the habit of going beneath the surface of things. A broad mind fosters a catholic spirit, but this means the spirit of the catholic religion--the only religion which is suited to all men's needs. It is progressive, not because it modifies the ancient foundations of truth, but because it enters more and more adequately into the bearing of the Creeds on related departments of truth and life. It is tolerant in that it respects every man's personal liberty, and seeks to propagate truth by simple persuasion, while incapable of seeming to make terms 1 See Declaration on Unity, issued by the American Bishops, Gen. Introduction to Dogmatic Theology presents a rare examination of dogmatic theology from an Anglican perspective. Originally published in 1882, Litton's work holds to the essentials of evangelical faith, while drawing heavily from St. Augustine. Primarily a dogmatic theology, Litton's work also serves indirectly as a commentary on the 39 Articles, yet is free from the limitations a true commentary would present. It deals with subjects such as faith, Christian theism, the state of man, angels, and the person and work of Christ. Readers will find this book a comprehensive and balanced treatment of Anglican dogmatic theology.
Excerpt from Introduction to Dogmatic Theology: On the Basis of the Thirty-Nine Articles I have heard with great thankfulness of the Publisher's decision to issue a new edition of Litton's Introduction to Dogmatic Theology. It is a work which ought to be in the hands of every one who is engaged in preparing either others or himself for the pastoral office. To say that it is the product of ripe scholarship would sound impertinent in the ears of those who know anything about Litton and his writings: but there is another merit to which I can refer more freely, and that is, that the work is true to its name; it is a treatise on dogmatic theology: it is free from the limitations to which commentaries on the Thirty-nine Articles are necessarily subject: it is a comprehensive, balanced, thorough treatment of dogmatic theology from the standpoint of a loyal son of the Church of England.
