Excerpt from Interpretive Reading The creation of literature demands the united effort of mind and heart and will. The study of literature also de mands the united effort of mind and heart and will. Ana lytic or critical st'udy alone calls forth only mental effort. Creative study makes demands upon the emotions and the will. No literature has been truly studied or its beauty truly felt until it has been studied for interpretive or crea tive reading. In the study for interpretation the mind must dwell longer on the thought, and in consequence must find deeper mean ing in it. In the effort to interpret the thought, the thought in a flash seems to be the speaker's own, emotion is aroused, and a finer appreciation of the thought developed. Interpretation demands not only understanding and emo tion, but also will power. A noble interpretation of any great work of literature makes great demands upon the speaker's will power. The giving of uplifting thought to others develops the mind and heart and will. The mind finds its expression through voice and body; hence these agents of expression should be trained to act in harmony with the mind. Excerpt from Interpretative Reading Techniques and Selections Interpretative reading should make distinct contributions to mental stability and emotional maturity. Since literature is an interpretation of life it calls for an understanding of life and contributes to living. Thus it sets up a constructive cycle quite contrary to the vicious cycles which bring maladjust ment. As one learns more about literature he has better under standing of life which enables him to interpret literature more effectively. In working for abandon to emotion and while us ing restraint in its expression one should achieve emotional balance. Since an interpretative art requires an objective atti tude toward emotion it should render one more objective toward his own emotions. Thus, through experiencing the thoughts and feelings expressed in literature and through shar ing them with listeners, the student receives that which is basic to mental balance and emotional maturity. Excerpt from A Fourth Reader Aim of this Series. The authors believe that schools should place more emphasis upon animated, expressive oral reading. Teachers are doing more today toward the cultivation of an appetite for good literature and the establishment of a reading habit among children than ever before. All this is a splendid work. But a greater emphasis upon interpretative oral expression is now needed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Essentials of Teaching Reading There seems to be no scarcity of thoroughly good manual of elocution, of expositions of primary methods, and of essays on the teaching of literature. Each field of work, excepting possibly that of methods in intermediate and grammar-school reading, seems to be satisfactorily covered by the material contained in a half-dozen books, each one of which touches but a single department. There seems to have been no book which includes those things in all the departments that are of practical value to the ordinary teacher. This book is planned to meet this need. Effort has been made to cover all that is of real use to the teacher in the many lines of reading work. Effort has been made to cover all the essential elements that the good teacher of reading should know, and to omit all that is not essential. It has been attempted to put under one cover at least the minimum of what the teacher of reading should know. No attempt has been made to invent novel methods, or to make the book a dictionary of devices. No good thing has been omitted because it is old. The authors feel pleased rather then chagrined when an experienced teacher says, "That plan is not new. I have been using it for years." As a matter of fact, all of the methods explained have been tested by experience. Part Three, including the chapters on Primary Methods, Parts of a Recitation and Assignment of the Lesson, Classification of Material, Obstacles to Good Expression, Use of the Dictionary, Articulation, and the Illustrative Lessons, is the most important part of the book. Excerpt from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage Canto Fourth: And the Prisoner of Chillon These poems, and indeed all poems, should be taught as literature, and the primary aim should be literary ap preciation. The teacher is often confronted with the problem of getting pupils to see the essential difference between poetry and prose. This can best be done by good interpretative reading and by calling attention to the fact that poetry makes more of an emotional than an intellectual appeal, that it is largely imaginative and suggestive, and that it deals more with great truths than with facts.
