Chemistry International is a four-chapter news magazine of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Chapters 1 and 2 contain the membership lists and alphabetical index of IUPAC bodies 1983-1985. Chapter 3 lists all official programs ofthe Union in operation in its special Committees and in Commissions of the Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Macromolecular, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, and Clinical Chemistry Divisions. The last chapter presents the minutes of the 32nd Council Meeting.

This book on "Polymer Fracture" might as well have been called "Kinetic Theory of Polymer Fracture". The term "kinetic theory", however, needs some de finition or, at least, some explanation. A kinetic theory deals with and particu larly considers the effect of the existence and discrete size, of the motion and of the physical properties of molecules on the macroscopic behavior of an ensemble, gaseous or other. A kinetic theory of strength does have to consider additional aspects such as elastic and anelastic deformations, chemical and physical reactions, and the sequence and distribution of different disintegration steps. In the last fifteen years considerable progress has been made in the latter do mains. The deformation and rupture of molecular chains, crystals, and morphologi cal structures have been intensively investigated. The understanding of the effect of those processes on the strength of polymeric materials has especially been furthered by the development and application of spectroscopical methods (ESR, IR) and of the tools offracture mechanics. It is the aim of this book to relate the conventional and successful statistical, parametrical, and continuum mechanical treatment of fracture phenomena to new results on the behavior of highly stressed molecular chains.
In 1974, as we approached the National Bicentennial and the Centenary of the American Chemical Society, Professor Otto Vogl, then Chairman of the Division of Polymer Chemistry, arranged a very special symposium dedicated to a review of the history of the Divi sion. It was an extraordinary occasion which included remarks by Professors Herman Mark, Charles Marvel, William Bailey, and Charles Overberger, all past Chairmen of the Division. The Executive Committee of the Division of Polymer Chemistry felt that 1976 deserved even more attention since it was to be also the 25th, the Silver Anniversary, of the Division of Polymer Chemis try. This year would be a most appropriate one not only to review milestones in our discipline, but also to look to the future. It was decided to undertake this volume and Dr. R. D. Ulrich agreed to serve as editor in assembling the collected papers. It is the hope of the officers of the Division that this volume will serve many purposes - a reference text, a record, and a source of perspective. F. E. This book is composed of 69 chapters that include information on the members of different divisions and committees, as well as the minutes of the 28th Council Meeting.
Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.
