The United States is a leading country for hosting international students. Students around the world frequently seek higher levels of education outside their home country, and the once relatively homogenous international student population of the past has diversified. Growing evidence suggests that international students face a number of hurdles when studying abroad. A large amount of published research reveals how anxiety, ambiguity, and uncertainty challenge communication and identity (Ekachai, Hinchcliff-Pelias, & Greer, 1998; Gudykunst, 1995, 2005; Gudykunst & Kim, 1992) when people from different cultures interact. However, when considering the international student population, most studies have focused on either U.S. students studying abroad, or on shifting enrollment, delays in arrival, or financial and political concerns for international students coming to U.S. universities. Fewer studies focus on the transformation process that international students experience on a U.S. campus; even fewer examine the intersections between culture, communication, identities, and university orientation programs. Acculturation is one theoretical lens to view sojourners' experiences when participating in new cultural forums. Early acculturation theory used to view culture as being at the center of experiences leaving sojourners' positionalities as powerless victims to a system. Recent studies co-define individuals and environments (Kim, 2001) affecting acculturation and bringing communication to the center of experience, endowing sojourners with agency and recognizing the importance of voice. This study explores sojourners in the U.S. from a communication perspective. Notions of home, new places, new practices, and new meanings inform ways in which sojourners negotiate cultural identities in changing discursive spaces. Sojourners offer insight into cultural identities as a "state of becoming" (S. Hall, 1996) by articulating their emerging identities through cross-cultural and intercultural interaction.
Temporary migration is a human response to uncertain economic, ecological, political and socio-cultural environments. This book provides an important contribution to the literature on the rights, lived experiences and trajectories of temporary migrants. It focuses on the precarity of temporary migrants at different scales in urban settings, varying from the household, institution, and neighbourhood, to the city. Temporary migrants experience oscillations in precarity that vary with their categorization as skilled (professionals with valued skill sets, international students) or unskilled (domestic workers, labourers), their ambiguous legal status and the locales in which they reside and work. Individual chapters use case studies from around the world (USA, Canada, Ireland, Turkey, Singapore, China) to show how temporal and scalar precarity intersect and are mediated by national and local policies, civil society, as well as the personal and social attributes of migrants themselves such as gender, race, and country of origin. Although often overlooked due to their transitory status, the chapters demonstrate how temporary migrants are embedded in urban life and resist their categorization as disposable through individual and collective efforts. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Sociology, Politics, Human Geography, Urban Studies, and Social and Cultural Anthropology. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
Abstract: A cohort of ten first-year international undergraduate student sojourners was studied during the members' first year of enrollment at a major American research institution with an eye toward identifying themes in the profiled sojourners' pre-arrival choice processes and post-arrival adjustment experiences. This phenomenological study sought to answer, in detail, a deceptively simple research question: what does it mean to be an new international undergraduate sojourner on an American campus? Areas of inquiry included the processes by which the participants and their families took the decision to pursue undergraduate study in the United States; the participants' expectations surrounding their sojourns as compared to their actual experiences during their first year; and the participants' expectations and experiences in developing friendships with fellow sojourners and members of the host culture. Reflexive photography was utilized as a means of encouraging the participants to render their experiences with greater nuance. Major findings include the early ages at which decisions to become student sojourners were taken; the degree to which undergraduate sojourning is a norm among the participants and their home country peer groups; commonalities in rationales for undergraduate sojourning; and the role of familial affluence in taking the decision to sojourn. Detailed discussions of phenomenology and what van Manen (1997) labels "human sciences" research are presented in the course of this qualitative study.

Nations Unbound is a pioneering study of an increasing trend in migration-transnationalism. Immigrants are no longer rooted in one location. By building transnational social networks, economic alliances and political ideologies, they are able to cross the geographic and cultural boundaries of both their countries of origin and of settlement. Through ethnographic studies of immigrant populations, the authors demonstrate that transnationalism is something other than expanded nationalism. By placing immigrants in a limbo between settler and visitor, transnationalism challenges the concepts of citizenship and of nationhood itself.

The crippling custom of footbinding is the thematic touchstone for Judy Yung's engrossing study of Chinese American women during the first half of the twentieth century. Using this symbol of subjugation to examine social change in the lives of these women, she shows the stages of "unbinding" that occurred in the decades between the turn of the century and the end of World War II. The setting for this captivating history is San Francisco, which had the largest Chinese population in the United States. Yung, a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Francisco, uses an impressive range of sources to tell her story. Oral history interviews, previously unknown autobiographies, both English- and Chinese-language newspapers, government census records, and exceptional photographs from public archives and private collections combine to make this a richly human document as well as an illuminating treatise on race, gender, and class dynamics. While presenting larger social trends Yung highlights the many individual experiences of Chinese American women, and her skill as an oral history interviewer gives this work an immediacy that is poignant and effective. Although today's mathematical research community takes its international character very much for granted, this ''global nature'' is relatively recent, having evolved over a period of roughly 150 years-from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. During this time, the practice of mathematics changed from being centered on a collection of disparate national communities to being characterized by an international group of scholars for whom thegoal of mathematical research and cooperation transcended national boundaries. Yet, the development of an international community was far from smooth and involved obstacles such as war, political upheaval, and national rivalries. Until now, this evolution has been largely overlooked by historians andmathematicians alike. This book addresses the issue by bringing together essays by twenty experts in the history of mathematics who have investigated the genesis of today's international mathematical community. This includes not only developments within component national mathematical communities, such as the growth of societies and journals, but also more wide-ranging political, philosophical, linguistic, and pedagogical issues. The resulting volume is essential reading for anyone interestedin the history of modern mathematics. The book hypothesizes that creative economy might constitute an enlargement of its predecessors that not only democratizes creativity and relativizes intellectual property law, but also emphasizes the social conditions of creative work. It documents how these profound shifts have brought to the forefront forms of knowledge production based on the commons and driven by ideas, not profitability per se; and have given rise to the notion of not just 'knowledge management' but the design of 'creative institutions' embodying new patterns of work.
