This publication presents a set of examples of different approaches for estimating potential exposures in different countries based on participants' experience and considering the IAEA Safety Standard on a generic framework for consideration of radiological environmental impact, including potential exposures.
This publication provides a practical resource for emergency planning, and fulfils, in part, functions assigned to the IAEA in the Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency. If used effectively, it will help users to develop a capability to adequately respond to a nuclear or radiological emergency.
Radioactive material is used in many human activities, and whenever unsealed radioactive sources are present, intakes of radionuclides by workers can occur. Intakes can occur by a number of routes, and the monitoring of workers and the workplace is an integral part of any occupational radiation protection programme. This report contains practical advice on the interpretation of such monitoring results and the assessment of committed effective doses to workers.
All recent intercomparisons of assessment of internal doses have shown a wide variety of evaluation procedures, depending on the training of the dosimetrist as well as on the hardware and software tools. Because of the relevance of the issue for internal dosimetrists, the IAEA organized a new exercise, in cooperation with the IDEAS project "General Guidelines for the Evaluation of Incorporation Monitoring Data", focused especially on the effect of the guidelines on the harmonization of internal dosimetry. Several cases were selected for the exercise with the aim of covering a wide range of practices in the nuclear fuel cycle and in medical applications. The cases were: acute intake of HTO; acute inhalation of fission products 137Cs and 90Sr; intake of 60Co; repeated intakes of 131I; intake of enriched uranium; single intake of plutonium radionuclides and 241Am. A Web based approach was used for the presentation of the cases, collection of responses and potential discussion of the results. Solutions to these cases were reported by 80 participants worldwide. This report presents and discusses the main findings and recommendations for future actions.
This publication provides guidance and recommendations on arrangements to be made at the preparedness stage, as part of overall emergency preparedness, for the termination of a nuclear or radiological emergency and the subsequent transition from the emergency exposure situation to either a planned exposure situation or an existing exposure situation. It elaborates the prerequisites that need to be fulfilled so that responsible authorities can declare the nuclear or radiological emergency ended and it gives detailed guidance on adapting and lifting protective actions. This publication, jointly sponsored by 10 international organizations (FAO, IAEA, ICAO, ILO, IMO, INTERPOL, OECD/NEA, UN OCHA, WHO and WMO) is intended to assist Member States in the application of IAEA Safety Standards Series Nos GSR Part 3 and GSR Part 7.

This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on a general framework for performing prospective radiological impact assessments for facilities and activities, to estimate and control the radiological effects on the public and on the environment. This radiological environmental impact assessment is intended for planned exposure situations as part of the authorization process and, when applicable, as part of a governmental decision making process for facilities and activities. The situations covered in the assessment include both exposures expected to occur in normal operation as well as potential exposures. The assessment of the radiological impacts includes consideration of the risk of radiation effects for humans and for populations of non-human biota. Guidance is provided on the assumptions and input data to be used, the necessary models for environmental transfer and radiation dose assessment and the definition and use of criteria for informing decisions.
