Excerpt from A Record of the Inscriptions on the Tablets and Grave-Stones in the Burial-Grounds of Christ Church, Philadelphia: Compiled and Arranged at the Request of Vestry The property on which the church is built was pur chased in the year 1695, only thirteen years after the city was founded, and when the population numbered about The first church interments were made in this ground, but the population of the city increasing rapidly, it was soon found necessary to secure a lot in the suburbs for a burial-place. Accordingly, in the year 1719, the ground at Fifth and Arch Streets was pur chased, and most of the interments were afterwards made there. Almost all the old families of Philadelphia will find that the remains of some of their ancestors rest in this hallowed ground, as it was for a long time the main repository of the dead in the city. The earliest date, as at present seen on the inscriptions, is 1721, but interments were made there during the year it was Opened, and no stones appear to have been placed over the graves. It is a cause of regret that tablets were not always erected over every grave, as memorials of the departed. Excerpt from Gravestone Inscriptions, Lee, Mass., Including All Extant of the Quarter Century, 1826-1850: Carefully Reproduced Before the end of this period the last pioneer of adult age when the town Was incorporated, and the last Revolutionary soldier residing in the town had passed away. Appreciation of the labors, struggles and sacrifices of the hardy, industrious and courageous men who felled the forest, cleared the boulder strewn soil, and fought for our country's independence will surely grow with the years. The epitaphs of many of that sturdy stock appear in this collection, and perhaps the printed page will preserve them a little longer than their crum bling gravestones. The inscriptions in type represent the originals as closely as possible with the type at command. An impression of each was used for copy, so that a faithful transcript is given with the spelling and punctuation as on the stones. However, despite all care, there are several slight misprints. All found are mentioned in the notes, except the following: on page 49, fourth line from the bottom of the last column, an e is omitted from the word sweet.
