The purpose of this report is to support the preparation of a master plan for The Spit, specifically the context, opportunities and visioning phase (Phase 1). This phase of the project aims to establish important background information to understand the current site conditions, opportunities and challenges. This report identifies the infrastructure for purposes of locating existing and proposed corridors to be considered for master planning purposes and includes some high-level discussion on the infrastructure in the project area.
The Southport Spit master plan commenced in August 2017 to provide for a low-rise future for The Spit in accordance with the Gold Coast City Council's current planning scheme. The master plan aims to revitalise The Spit and increase its benefit to the Gold Coast as a community asset. It will focus on enhancing the public realm of The Spit to create a community space for local residents and improve the connection to the surrounding marine environment, including the Broadwater. It will also consider opportunities for job creation through tourism, entertainment and recreation. Over the weekend of 28-29 April, the first of four master planning workshops were held, where community members and stakeholders started discussions towards a shared vision for The Spit. This consultation report provides a summary of the feedback provided.
