This collection of research articles deals with various problems of Sanskrit literature, ancient Indian history, art and architecture. Section I deals with problems presented by several Sanskrit works, namely the lower limit of the date of the original Harivamsa, Kalapriyanatha mentioned in Bhavabhuti`s plays the identification of the date of Dhananjaya the author of the Dvisandhana Kavya and the Namamala and the fixation of his date the historical background of Rajasekhara`s Viddhasalabhanjika etc. It gives also for the first time a detailed account for Soddhala`s Udayasundarikatha.
A galaxy of renowned scholars and orientologists from India and abroad have contributed twenty-seven learned papers for this volume as a token of the high esteem in which they held the great Indologist and savant, Professor D. C. Sircar. These papers traverse a large variety of subjects in the different sub-fields of Indology. While the essay by A. L. Basham enhances our understanding of Asoka, Romila Thapar’s paper is a useful addition to our knowledge of the Mauryan period. J.S.M. Derrett’s piece on a quotation from the Dhammapada gives an interesting analysis. John C. Huntington’s study of a section of an early portable shrine from Gandhara is fascinating. The evidence produced by H. D. Sankalia after his recent excavation at Pune he pushed back Indian Civilization to the Old Stone Age. R. C. Gaur’s pper gives a scintillating account of Mathura-Govardhana region in its historical perspective. Arabinda Ghosh gives a bird’s eyeview of the architectural and artistic heritage of India. S. K. Maity who had life-long association with his teacher has painstakingly compiled an exhaustive bibliography of Professor D. C. Sircar’s published books, research papers and articles on epigraphy and palaeography.
He has presented more than a dozen papers at academic conferences in North America, Europe, and South Asia, including Harvard University, Humboldt University, Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute, and the Max Mueller Bhavan in New Delhi, India.
The present volume, comprising ninteen articles by renowned scholars, is divided into three sections, namely, Buddhist Jaina and Hindu Philsosphical Researches. The articles in Hindu section take a comperative base. K.K.Raj compares the Buddhist and Mimamsa views on Laksana. K. Bhattacharya speaks of grammarians and philososphers regarding post-Panini grammarians on a certain anusasana. R.C.Dwivedi compares kashmir Saivism with Sankara`s Vedanta and T.S.Rukmani compares Siddhis as found in the Bhagavata Purana and in Patanjali`s Yogasutras. R.V. Joshi compares the Advaita and the Vaisnava views of the matter.

Written by renowned academics in the field of Indology, and drawing on new sources, this book shows how he embodies the significant passage from eighteenth century colonial expansion, to the professional, transnational ethos of nineteenth century intellectual life and scholarly enquiry.
The ground plan for the present volume is unique in Indological studies. Twenty-three scholars from seven countries were invited to respond to issues elaborated in one or more of Wilhelm Halbfass` own critical essays on Edward Said`s Orientalism and related topics. The individual contributions are grouped under four headings: Cross-Cultural Encounter and Dialogue, Issues of Comparative Philosophy, Topics in Classical Indian Philosophy, and Indian Religion, Past and Present. The largest number of papers center on or touch upon topics dealt with in India and Europe. Tradition and Reflection forms the subject matter and starting point of the second largest group of papers. One paper offers significant supplementary observations on the conception of Karman. On Being and What There Is has caught the attention of three contributors. Two authors take specific observations in the book as the starting point of their own related investigations and reflections, whereas another author examines in very broad and substantial manner whether the question of Being was at all addressed in Indian philosophy. Only three contributors specifically respond to On Being and What There Is. One contributor presents with his fundamental reflections on a comparative history of world philosophy.
