Excerpt from Letters From India AT the meeting of the American Oriental Society in 1903, both Professor Bloomfield and Professor Lanman, in speaking of my husband's life and work, said that his letters from India deserved to be published. When the report of this meeting came to me and I read the sug gestion relating to the Indian correspondence, a half formed plan which had been in my mind for some time took definite shape, and in the absence of a fitter person to undertake the work, I set myself the task of editing the letters. From the first I have had the help and encouragement of Mr. Stratton's friends. When I remember how freely this help has been given, I wonder that the book is not better - better in every arrangement and detail but one point Ihave kept in mind, and in that I think I have not failed. I have wished that the reader may gain through the letters themselves, with the least possible obstruction by me, not only Mr. Stratton's pictures of Indian life, but a clear impression of his own personality. He liked to enter into little details, so that the letters as they stand have in most cases told their story. Excerpt from A Woman's Love Letters I stood far off above the haunts of men Somewhere, I know not, when the sky was dim From some worn glory, and the morning hymn Of the gay oriole echoed from the glen. Wandering, I felt earth's peace, nor knew I sought A visioned face, a voice the wind had caught. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Literary Love-Letters and Other Stories Yes, they were chattering about you, especially around the table where some solid ladies of Chicago served iced drinks. I was sipping it all in with the punch, and looking at the pinks above the dark hair, and won dering if you found having your own way as good fun as when you were eighteen You have gained, my dear lady, while I have been knocking about the world. You are now more than sweet you are almost hand some. I suppose it is a question of lights and the time of day whether or not you are really brilliant. And you carry surety in your face. There is nothing in Chicago to startle you, perhaps not in the world. She at the punch remarked, casually, to her of the sherbet: I wonder when Miss Armstrong will settle matters with Lane? It is the best she can do now, though he isn't as well worth while as the men she threw over. And her neighbor replied: She might do worse than Lane. She could get more from him than the showy ones. So Lane is the name of the day. They have gauged you and put you down at Lane. I took an ice and waited - but you will have to supply the details. Excerpt from The Love Letters of an Irishwoman Here I am sitting in my boodwar on the third floor using my trunk for a writing desk and as I sit here I can look out my window and see Kee gan's goat on Mccarthy's lot, calmly chewing a red flannel shirt as he gazes up toward the broad blue dome of the heavens. Oh, that clear goat. I could dash out there acrost the lots, jump the dump and cast my arms around his silky neck, then I could gaze into his dreamy blinkers and kiss him, oh, a thousand times. Why? Do you ask me why I am so moved by a goat, I who have been brought up with a goat in the kitchen most of the time, well better people than me have been moved by a goat before now, and Mike dear, this goat is not like other goats.
