Copy. Legal document involving a land exchange between Knox and Samuel and Isaac Winslow.
Pages one-three contain a letter to William Bingham. Page 4 has a letter to William Duer. There is only one signature, at the end of the Duer letter. Describes his trip to Elizabethtown. Tells Bingham that Mr. Baucel, the agent to Monsieur D'Espremenil, was waiting when he arrived. Goes into the details of the quid pro quo that Duer offered to D'Espremenil (for background see GLC02437.05930). Believes the arrangement is beneficial to Bingham's interest. Reports The fever in Philadelphia has not abated, but I do not find any dead recently whose name I am acquainted with. References receiving Duer's letter of 26 September. Reports that he wrote to Bingham and recommended the arrangement to him. Knox hopes for success.

Statement of Henry Knox's account with Samuel Winslow from 23 October 1789 to 4 December 1793.
Notes since receiving Knox's reply (no date given) he has been trying to negotiate a loan upon the strength of my Expectations; not having yet been able to accomplish my purpose. Reports that Henry Jackson encouraged him to make a draft upon Knox. Accordingly he has drawn up a bill for [dollar sign] 250. Will leave another bill for [dollar sign] 250 in the hands of his brother. Has only done this because of the most pressing demands. Will consider the money an advance towards my part of the Consideration money of the patent Contract. Does not think Knox will need the legal paper work for the land as I trust You will be satisfied with our solemn declarations in the premises.
Initialed by Knox. Forwards papers related to the Winslow portion of the Waldo patent. Also encloses the correspondence he has had with Nathan Lane. Sends along Waldo's will, which was proved on 28 October 1785, and Hannah Flucker's letter of attorney dated 23 July 1784 (none of these papers are included). Says It is extremely important to me to complete immediately the purchase of this estate if it can be done with due security to myself. Believes Lane and Winslow are in Boston to complete the deal. Wants Lewis to deal with his questions as quickly as possible. For the questions, see GLC02437.05907.

Unsigned, but content and docket suggest the author is Henry Knox. Written from Montpelier, Knox's home in Thomaston, Maine. Writes that he received Winslow's earlier letter. Declares that he is not yet ready to sell the land in question, and if he decides to, he will sell it at public auction, which would allow Mr. Anderson his fair chance at purchasing it. Discusses several other business and land transactions.
Discusses bringing his business in dealing with the Waldo patent to a safe and satisfying conclusion. Wishes Winslow and Dane would prepare a plan for some safe remedy. Pages dotted with lots of black spots. Watermarked. Letterpress copy.
