This Apitherapy curriculum is divided in 8 chapters, helping the trainees go through it step by step, following the guideline established by the European Qualifications Framework. This curriculum includes not only content about Apitherapy, bee products used in alternative medicine with their characteristics, indications and administration, but also Useful Links to various helpful website pages containing articles and pictures, Counter – indications, Glossary, where the trainees will find definitions of key words used in the content of the curriculum. The learner has knowledge about: what apitherapy is; ways of working; ways of implementing; benefits of bee products use in apitherapy; characteristics, indications and administration of bee products such as honey, propolis, bee pollen, bees wax, royal jelly and bee medicinal venom. The learner has skills to: select and apply basic methods, tools, materials and information in the area of apitherapy. The learner has competence of: being able to understand the curative properties of bee products and to implement the recommendations regarding the proper range of use of bee products in treating diseases; to adapt their own behavior to circumstances in solving problems.
The nature .and diversity of presentations at the conference on: "Bee Products: Prop erties, Applications and Apitherapy" held at Tel-Aviv on May 26--30, 1996, emphasize the increasing interest of physicians, practitioners, scientists, herbalists, dieticians, cosmeti cians, microbiologists, and beekeepers in different facets of bee products. This volume consists of a selection of 31 contributions presented at the conference and which provide information on the present status of our knowledge in this area. In spite of their diversity, they reflect the mainstream of the conference, namely: "Imported" Prod ucts (honey, pollen and propolis), Exocrine Secretions of Workers (venom, royal jelly). Toxicity and Contaminants, Quality Control, Marketing, Apitherapy, Cosmetics, etc. Since antiquity, honey as well as other bee products were used as food, as a cure for ailments of humans and animals, and as cosmetics. We hope that this volume will contribute to interdisciplinary studies on chemical composition, pharmacological effects, nutrition, and other aspects of bee products. Critical and unbiased experimental research may unravel the yet unknown composition and mode of action of bee products and elucidate many unanswered questions. The noteworthy features of this conference were the participants from all parts of the world and of different cultural backgrounds, who shared their keen interest and curios ity regarding honey bees and their products. We thank all of them for their personal con tribution to the success of this conference.
Bees provide a critical link in the maintenance of ecosystems, pollination. They play a major role in maintaining biodiversity, ensuring the survival of many plants, enhancing forest regeneration, providing sustainability and adaptation to climate change and improving the quality and quantity of agricultural production systems. In fact, close to 75 percent of the world’s crops that produce fruits and seeds for human consumption depend, at least in part, on pollinators for sustained production, yield and quality. Beekeeping, also called apiculture, refers to all activities concerned with the practical management of social bee species. These guidelines aim to provide useful information and suggestions for a sustainable management of bees around the world, which can then be applied to project development and implementation.
This is a practical tool to help beekeepers, veterinarians and beekeeping advisory services to properly identify main honeybee diseases and to take the most appropriate actions in the apiary to control and/or prevent disease outbreaks. This publication follows the TECA publication Main bee diseases: good beekeeping practices (2018) which provided a more general overview of good beekeeping practices for bee diseases. This manual is a unique publication because, through its presentation of practical information, simple visuals, and understandable content, it helps beekeepers to correctly identify main honeybee diseases in a timely manner. More specifically, the manual creatively illustrates actions which facilitate the identification of disease symptoms. It also presents a comprehensive list of good beekeeping practices to adopt in the apiary as well as biosafety measures to reduce the risk of the introduction and the spread of main honeybee diseases. The manual’s overall objective is ultimately to support a more sustainable beekeeping sector.
The purpose of this bulletin is to introduce beekeepers, people considering keeping bees and those interested in processing and marketing to the large diversity of products that can be derived from beekeeping for income generation. This book presents an updated discussion of the chemical composition and biological properties of the main bee products. Specific attention is focused on the beneficial biological activities of bee products in human health. Honey, royal jelly, propolis, bee pollen and bee venom are used as nutriment and in traditional medicine. Their composition is rather variable and depends on the floral source and external factors, such as seasonal, environmental conditions and processing. Bee products are rich in several essential nutrients and non essential nutrients, as sugars, minerals, proteins, free amino acids, vitamins, enzymes and polyphenols, that seem to be closely related to their biological functions. The effects of these products in nutrition, aging and age-related diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and pathogen infections are discussed.

The importance of pollinator species to man's survival and the functioning of the world's ecosystems is recognised. Environmental and other stressors have taken their toll on many pollinator species and their abundance. The European Honey bee (Apis mellifera) and man have had a long mutually beneficial relationship and it is vital that this continues. Like all organisms, honey bees need food and shelter to ensure their survival and ability to thrive. A key factor in achieving this is the understanding of the role of good nutrition in honey bee biology. This book considers the role of good nutrition for honey bees in the British Isles and the implications of these requirements for beekeepers and their beekeeping management techniques and for those who manage land on which forage for honey bees and other pollinators might be grown. About the Authors David Aston, B.Sc., MSc., Ph.D., NDB is a biologist and a Master Beekeeper having kept bees continuously for 40 years in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He holds the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB), has been Board Chairman and a current member of its Executive. He has contributed to the work of the British Beekeepers' Association (BBKA) for many years and has served as Chair of Trustees and is now a Past President. He is also a Trustee of the CB Dennis British Beekeepers' Research Trust. Sally Bucknall, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., CBiol. is a biologist and environmentalist. She has been a Trustee and Chair of Trustees for the charity Garden Organic (Henry Doubleday Research Association, HDRA). This husband and wife team have published two other books relating to beekeeping, namely Plants and Honey Bees - their relationships and Keeping Healthy Honey Bees.
