Excerpt from In Old New York "Apretty assemblage, Mr. Boylston." "As pretty, your Excellency, as I have seen in New York." "I hope the occasion may prove worthy of it. Have you made a choice, Miss Sophia?" inclining his head toward the young lady who sat in the farther comer of the carriage. "I am between the two horns of a dilemma, your Excellency," Miss Boylston answered, laughingly. "My sympathies run with the Virginian; but I confess my judgment leans toward the English horse. So you see I am at contraries whether to risk my judgment or my sentiments, for I should be vastly sorry to find either amiss." "Then back your sentiments," the Governor urged in good humour, "for 'tis a common experience that a young lady's most trustworthy guide is her heart." Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old New York How would you like to go to New York to live, little girl? The little girl looked up into her father's face to see if he was making fun. He did some times. He was beginning to go down the hill of middle life, a rather stout personage with a fair, florid complexion, brown hair, rough and curly, and a border of beard shaved well away from his mouth. Both beard and hair were getting threads of white in them. His jolly blue eyes were mostly in a twinkle, and his good-natured mouth looked as if he might be laughing at you. Excerpt from Elizabeth Schuyler: A Story of Old New York Revolution was seething in New York as well as Massachusetts and Virginia and throughout the country for several years before the war began for the independence of the thirteen colonies. Unjust decrees of despotic governors were stoutly resisted. When the stamp act was repealed the Sons of Lib etty erected a liberty pole, which served as the bat tle ground when British soldiers attempted to de stroy it. Fresh impositions, new outrages on the part of the British government aroused the peo ple, and the Sons of Liberty shouted defiance to measures which curtailed their rights. Handbills were circulated and John Lamb was chosen to pre side over a public meeting in the Fields. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New-York Cries in Rhyme New-york is built on the south end of the Island of Manhattan, now called new-york Island. The noble River Hudson, or North River, flows along its north west side, while the East River, which unites with the majestic Long Island Sound, waters the south-east border. It is thought that no place in the world, embraces so many natural advantages for commerce and trade, as the port of new-york. None, perhaps, is in a more flourishing condition, than it is at this time. A great many buildings have been recently erected, and we may behold whole squares and magnificent structures going up in various parts of the city. Vessels from almost every commercial country, may be seen in its port; and the steamboats, m the summer are numerous, and ply in every direction. By great labor and expense, the numerous hills in that part of the Island on which the city is building, have been leveled, and valleys and swamps have been filled up. Only a few years ago, there was a lake of fresh water, called the Collect, in the middle of the city, which is now firm land; and spacious streets and stately buildings, now occupy a place where the boys of new-york formerly spent many hours in skating!
