The book illustrates how Lesson Study can be applied to craft metacognitive teaching strategies to enhance students’ learning to learn competencies. Based on the findings of an empirical study of a university-funded teaching development project, this book reports how to apply Lesson Study and Learning Study to enhance teachers’ metacognitive teaching competencies with a view to tackling the impacts and challenges created by and underlying the learning to learn curriculum. The book allows readers to experience metacognitive learning by sorting the prior knowledge on the metacognition, setting the goal and planning reading schedule, checking their understanding and progress, evaluating what they have or have not learned and reflected on their reading experience and feelings. Readers can grasp the key concept underpinning metacognitive teaching, including teaching strategies for developing students’ metacognitive abilities that include working on problem-solving activities, working on small collaborative groups, making metacognitive and learning strategies explicit, and encouraging students to reflect upon and talk about their learning.

The 21st century bears the effects of various advancements in several different parts of human life. Sometimes it is called a “space age”, sometimes an “information age”, or a “computer age”. Some people have called it a digital age, or new media age too. However it is named, the time in which we live has challenged the lifestyles of the past and has brought about new requirements in skills and practices. Media literacy, leadership, critical thinking, and problem solving, are among the new skills required by the 21st century. However, the relationship between these skills and education has not yet been fully established. The philosophy of Lesson Study in Japan—teacher ownership, teacher professionalism, student learning-focused dialogue, teacher collaboration, and teacher professional community—has attracted educators and researchers worldwide. However, Lesson Study does not have the same meaning as its original Japanese expression Jugyou Kenkyuu, a combination of two Japanese words—Jugyou meaning instruction or lesson(s) and Kenkyuu meaning study or research. To bridge the gap between Jugyou Kenkyuu and Lesson Study and therefore maximize the potential of Lesson Study in the world, this edited volume provides two "mirrors" for those who wish to reflect on and implement Lesson Study within their own contexts.
