Landscape and Identity in the Modern Basque Country, 1800 to 1936 studies the relationship between landscape and modern identities in the Basque Country. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines cultural history and geography, it analyses the process of historical construction of the Basque landscape, highlighting its multiple political, social and cultural meanings. The book is divided into two parts: the first examines the discourses, images and representations of the Basque landscape; the second examines landscape practices through tourism, hiking and mountaineering. Focusing on the Basque case but establishing numerous connections with comparable phenomena in Western Europe, the book demonstrates that the landscape became a structuring element insofar as it helped shape individual identities while participating in the creation of social links. This book examines the processes of identity construction "from below" by means of new interpretative tools, such as the experience of landscape. This work, originally published in French, brings to an English-speaking audience a crucial issue in the modern history of the Basque Country, namely the cultural construction of a collective identity within the framework of a nation-state, such as Spain, confronted with multiple territorial identities. Approaching this question from the perspective of landscape provides new keys to understanding the processes of nation-building that occurred in Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

As we enter the 21st century, it becomes increasingly difficult to envisage a world detached from religion or an anthropology blind to its study. Yet, how people become religious is still poorly studied. Este libro está basado en una revisión y actualización del libro de la propia autora Etnicidad, identidad, interculturalidad. Teorías, conceptos y procesos de la relacionalidad grupal humana (2011). Muchas cosas han pasado desde entonces y aunque no caben todas en este voluminoso ejemplar hemos intentado incorporar algunos de los hechos y explicaciones más completas sobre el tema central que nos ocupa: la socialidad y relacionalidad social humanas, sus incardinaciones prácticas y sus consecuencias para los demás en un mundo cada vez más dislocado, pero con una historia detrás. Para facilitar la lectura y comprensión el libro se ha estructurado secuencialmente en partes y capítulos, y estos últimos en apartados. Así se promueve una visión genealógica y de conjunto a primera vista, que induce tanto a una lectura lógica secuencial pero también a la posibilidad de variadas entradas y salidas porque los temas remiten unos a otros, pero también pueden leerse después como unidades con significado propio.
Focusing on places, objects, bodies, narratives and ritual spaces where religion may be found or inscribed, the authors reveal the role of religion in contesting rights to places, to knowledge and to property, as well as access to resources. Through analyses of specific historical processes in terms of responses to socio-economic and political change, the chapters consider implicitly or explicitly the problematic relation between science (including social sciences and anthropology in particular) and religion, and how this connects to the new religious globalisation of the twenty-first century. Their ethnographies highlight the embodiment of religion and its location in landscapes, built spaces and religious sites which may be contested, physically or ideologically, or encased in memory and often in silence. Taken together, they show the importance of religion as a resource to the believers: a source of solace, spiritual comfort and self-willed submission.
