We are delighted to provide the proceedings of the sixth International Conference on Applied Engineering (ICAE), 2023, which was conducted in Batam on November 7th, 2023. This conference, which has as its theme "Synergizing Green Economy, Sustainable Development, and Digitalization for a Prosperous Future," is a significant international assembly that seeks to integrate technological innovation, economic expansion, and environmental sustainability. An ensemble of stakeholders, comprising policymakers, entrepreneurs, and experts, assembles to examine the mutually beneficial correlation that exists between digital advancements and a green economy. The acceptance rate for ICAE 2023 stands at 25%, leading to the selection of 28 substantial papers. The conference featured three distinct tracks: Informatics, Electronics, and Mechanicals. Two keynote addresses were delivered in conjunction with the outstanding technical paper presentations at the technical program. The keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Ir. Basuki Rahmatul Alam, Chair of the IEEE EDS Indonesia Chapter and Senior Member of IEEE, and Dr. MK Radhakrishnan, Technical Consultant at NanoRel LLP in Singapore and Vice President of IEEE EDS. Coordination effectiveness with the steering committee was crucial to guaranteeing the conference's success. We wish to convey our profound gratitude for their consistent guidance and support that accompanied the entire undertaking. The ICAE Chair Committee deserves special recognition for their conscientiousness in finalizing the peer-review procedure of technical papers, which ultimately led to the creation of a technical program of exceptional quality. Furthermore, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Conference Managers and all the authors who submitted their papers for the ICAE 2023 conference for their invaluable assistance. Additionally, we appreciate the assistance of the EAI staff in facilitating the production of this publication.
This book investigates the ways in which the social purposes of adult education are (re)interpreted over time, and between the global south and global north. It brings together thirty-seven authors from fourteen countries with extensive experience as academics and/or practitioners in the field. The book is inspired by the work and life of Lalage Bown, a leading proponent of post-colonial and inclusive visions of education for all. Over her long life she worked tirelessly to promote access to basic and higher education for people of all ages and backgrounds: with a deep commitment to striving for greater equality for women. Following an Introduction, the book is structured around four main themes: Adult Education and Social Justice; Decolonisation, Post-Colonialism and Indigenous Knowledge; From Literacy to Lifelong Learning; and, Fostering Excellence, Policy Development and Supporting Future Generation of Adult Educators. The book concludes with reflections on Lalage Bown’s Enduring Legacy.
This book lays out the principles and practices of transformative sustainability education using a relational way of thinking and being. Elizabeth A. Lange advocates for a new approach to environmental and sustainability education, that of rethinking the Western way of knowing and being and engendering a frank discussion about the societal elements that are generating climate, environmental, economic, and social issues. Highlighting the importance of Indigenous and life-giving cultures, the book covers educational theory, transformation stories of adult learners, social and economic critique, and visions of changemakers. Each chapter also has a strong pedagogical element, with entry points for learners and embodied practices and examples of taking action at micro/meso/macro levels woven throughout. Overall, this book enacts a relational approach to transformative sustainability education that draws from post humanist theory, process thought, relational ontology, decolonization theory, Indigenous philosophy, and a spirituality that builds a sense of sacred towards the living world. Co-published with Colleges and universities are increasingly becoming significant sites for adult education scholarship—in large part due to demographic shifts. With fewer U.S. high school graduates on the horizon, higher education institutions will need to attract “non-traditional” (i.e., older) adult learners to remain viable, both financially and politically. There is a need to develop a better corpus of scholarship on topics as diverse as, what learning theories are useful for understanding adult learning? How are higher education institutions changing in response to the surge of adult students? What academic programs are providing better learning and employment outcomes for adults in college? Adult education scholars can offer much to the policy debates taking place in higher education. This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.
