This book contains a selection of papers from a NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled "Stochastic models of hydrological processes and their applications to problems of environmental preservation" convened in Moscow over the period 23-27 November 1998. The Workshop was unique in providing the first opportunity for over a decade for countries of the Russian Federation to interact with other countries across the world to discuss hydrological science issues relevant to environmental management. The contrasting schools of thought within the Russian Federation and with other countries proved a fascinating and valuable experience for those fortunate enough to attend. The scientific content of the Workshop was motivated by a number of concerns. Water is a key natural resource whose modelling and management is made complex by its inherent spatial unevenness and time variability. Traditional methods for investigating hydrological processes in nature employ stochastic modelling and forecasting. However these are not well developed with regard to (i) representing the characteristics of hydrological regimes, and (ii) investigating the influence of water factors on processes which arise in biological systems and those involving hydrochemical, geophysical and other processes.
This book contains seven parts. The first part deals with some aspects of rainfall analysis, including rainfall probability distribution, local rainfall interception, and analysis for reservoir release. Part 2 is on evapotranspiration and discusses development of neural network models, errors, and sensitivity. Part 3 focuses on various aspects of urban runoff, including hydrologic impacts, storm water management, and drainage systems. Part 4 deals with soil erosion and sediment, covering mineralogical composition, geostatistical analysis, land use impacts, and land use mapping. Part 5 treats remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) applications to different hydrologic problems. Watershed runoff and floods are discussed in Part 6, encompassing hydraulic, experimental, and theoretical aspects. Water modeling constitutes the concluding Part 7. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), Xinanjiang, and Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) models are discussed. The book is of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of water resources, hydrology, environmental resources, agricultural engineering, watershed management, earth sciences, as well as those engaged in natural resources planning and management. This report presents the findings of a study to assess changes to flows into, and downstream of, the Usangu Wetlands, located in the headwaters of the Great Ruaha River, Tanzania. Hydrological data, in conjunction with remote sensing techniques, were used to provide insights into changes that have occurred to the Eastern Wetland. Results indicate that, between 1958 and 2004, inflows to the wetland declined by about 70 percent in the dry season months (July to November) as a consequence of increased human withdrawals, primarily for irrigation.

This book stemmed from a desire to provide a comprehensive account of some of the world's popular computer models of watershed hydrology. To achieve this objective, a variety of models that together spanned a range of characteristics were included. Some of those models represent a large class of models, some are comprehensive, some are applicable to not only civil works but also to agricultural, range and forest, and nonpoint source pollution fields; some are equipped with the GIS and remote sensing capability, and some represent a large cross-section of models from around the world. The subject matter of this book is divided into 29 chapters. Beginning with introductory remarks on watershed modeling in Chapter 1, model calibration and reliability estimation are presented in Chapters 2 and 3, respectively. The next ten chapters (4 to 13) present some of the popular models from around the world. These models are in the realm of civil engineering applications of watershed hydrology models. Some of the models are more comprehensive than others and some have the management capabilities. The next two models, presented in Chapters 14 and 15, are large-scale models and embody GIS and remote sensing technology. The models presented in Chapters 16 to 23 are more physically-based and distributed in nature, quite suited to nonpoint source pollution modeling, and to assess environmental impact of land use changes. The remaining 5 models presented in Chapters 24 to 29 are within the realm of agricultural and forestry applications.
