After meeting in school and dating, Andy Thompson, and Milly Richards, grew apart and began their adult lives separately, though they still held strong feelings for each other. While Milly sought a career in Design, Andy joined the Navy and began training as a SEAL, but after an auto accident led to his leg being amputated, he was discharged and with his dreams all but destroyed, chose to live on the sea, piloting a boat and doing his best to make a living. While working for a hotel chain, Milly was tasked with working on a new property in the Caribbean, but even though she was worried about a future hurricane, her boss ignored the threat until it was too late and the two were now trapped in the path of a Category Five Hurricane. Using her contacts, Milly managed to call home to warn her family about her predicament and her father contacted Andy’s family. When Andy learned that Milly was trapped, it brought back all those memories of her and realizing she meant more to him than anything else, he contacted his old Navy buddies and using a borrowed boat, they were able to barely reach the island alive just after the storm passed. Arriving safely was one thing, finding the love of his life was something even more difficult in the destruction and chaos now engulfing the island. Reaching her last known location, Andy was upset to find she was gone and frantically searched the surrounding area until he was able to decide where she had gone and had a difficult time reaching her before they were able to plan how to safely leave the island.

Ranger, the time-traveling golden retriever with search-and-rescue training, arrives in New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina approaches and residents start to evacuate the city. Ranger meets Clare Porter, who is searching for her grandmother. Once Ranger helps Clare find Nana, he takes shelter with them at their home in the Lower Ninth Ward, and they wait for Clare’s father to return from the gas station. But there’s no sign of him as hours pass and the weather gets worse. The wind picks up and rain pours down. And when the levees break, floodwaters dangerously rise, and Clare and Nana are separated. Praise for the first book in the Ranger in Time series: “This excellent story contains historical details, full-page illustrations, and enough action to keep even reluctant readers engaged.” —School Library Journal “The third-person narration expertly balances Ranger’s thoughts between the appropriately doglike (squirrels! bacon!) and the heroic (Ranger’s drive to find and protect).” —Kirkus Reviews “McMorris’s richly rendered illustrations heighten the plot’s many moments of danger and drama, and Messner incorporates a wealth of historical details into her rousing adventure story.” —Publishers Weekly

A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral around a relative calm centre known as the "eye." The "eye" is generally 20 to 30 miles wide, and the storm may extend outward 400 miles. As a hurricane approaches, the skies will begin to darken and winds will grow in strength. As a hurricane nears land, it can bring torrential rains, high winds, and storm surges. A single hurricane can last for more than 2 weeks over open waters and can run a path across the entire length of the eastern seaboard. August and September are peak months during the hurricane season that lasts from 1 June to 30 November. This book presents the facts and history of hurricanes.
Hurricane Dorian is a heartbreaking tale for The Bahamas. It was one of the strongest North Atlantic hurricanes and the strongest Bahamian hurricane and caused about $3.4 billion in damages to the Bahamian economy. Hurricane Dorian struck Abaco and Grand Bahama with wind speeds of 185 mph and had the highest wind speeds for a North Atlantic landfalling hurricane. The storm caused the death of 74 people in The Bahamas. In addition, more than 75 percent of all homes on Abaco were either damaged or destroyed. In East End, Grand Bahama, satellite data suggested that 76 to 100 percent of the buildings were destroyed. This book includes the meteorological history, records broken, compelling personal recollections, its impact on each island affected, a chapter on climate change and its effects on hurricanes, the benefits of hurricanes, and why we need them on planet Earth. This book is a must-read!

Testimony of David Walker, Comptroller Gen. of the U.S., before the Comm. on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, U.S. Senate. The size & strength of Hurricane Katrina resulted in one of the largest natural disasters in our nation's history. Hurricane Katrina raised major questions about our nation's readiness & ability to respond to catastrophic disasters. Hurricane Rita increased demands on an already stressed response & recovery effort by all levels of government. The two hurricanes provided a sobering picture of the overwhelming strains on response & recovery if there are back-to-back catastrophic disasters in the same area. Includes recommendations.
