The core of this book is the concept of huodegan (获得感), which refers to a sense of gain that includes perceived individual wellbeing and social development. Given that measuring sense of gain has become critical in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics and along with the social indicators movement in the last decade, building an index for evaluating sense of gain becomes critical. Apart from reviewing the existing index systems for social development and policy and the previous studies exploring the sense of gain, this book highlights the importance of combining Chinese socio-cultural features, established theories, and index systems.

Drawing on modernisation theory, this book charts the history and development of China’s rural education while examining the changes in rural teacher training and recruitment since the beginning of the twentieth century. Highlighting the changes in the composition of the body of rural teachers after modern schools were established in rural areas in China, the author outlines and discusses several historical phases that figure in the transformation of the teaching profession, including traditional private homeschooling teachers (sishu teachers), the earliest group of teachers of new-style schools, non-government teachers, teachers trained in normal schools and substitute teachers. Based on field studies in a county in northern China, the book analyses various contributing factors in rural teacher resourcing, ranging from China’s modernisation and urbanisation, the county’s social and economic development, management systems of rural schools and teachers, and teacher training and recruiting mechanisms. It also introduces the temporary solutions and long-term plans that have been adopted and implemented in different historical periods to regenerate the rural teaching force. This multifaceted book examines the free market reform of the Chinese healthcare system in the 1980s and the more collectivist or socialist counter-reforms that have been implemented since 2009 to remedy some of the problems introduced by marketization. The book is based on an ethnographical study in a Chinese county from 2011 to 2012, which investigated local people’s experience of healthcare reforms and the various ways in which they have adapted their own behavior to the constraints and opportunities introduced by these reforms. It provides a vivid depiction of the morality and emotionality of people’s experiences of the Chinese healthcare system and the myriad frustrations and sometimes desperation it induces not only among patients with significant health problems and their families, but also healthcare practitioners caught between their desire to do right by their patients and the penalties they personally incur if they do not adhere to institutionalized cost-saving measures. The people’s experiences within China’s health sector presented reflect many similar experiences in the wider Chinese society.
