To all the children who have embarked on a journey with hip dysplasia, we hope that you will be able to spread your wings far and wide, and soar farther then you ever imagined.
Hip dysplasia affects 1 in 1,000 babies, either as developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) or congential hip dysplasia (CDH). With this condition, the child's hip joint structure does not fit together normally and the problem can grow worse as the child grows. If untreated, the condition can cause serious hip problems in adulthood. Fortunately, this condition responds well to medical treatment and this book guides concerned parents through all of the options and obstacles of treating a child with hip dysplasia. The book covers hip anatomy, risk factors, how diagnosis is made, how to communicate with doctors about the condition and covers harnesses, braces, casts, surgery and potential complications for children ages 0-17. The book, also, addresses the special care needs of children with hip dysplasia and how to manage pain at home.
A comprehensive book for adults with developmental dysplasia of the hips, covering everything from hip anatomy, diagnosis, and treatment, to hospital stays, recovery, and getting back to normal. Includes over 400 quotations from hip dysplasia patients.
A Finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award for Best Novella Sarah Gailey's wildfire debut River of Teeth is a rollicking alternate history adventure that Charlie Jane Anders calls "preposterously fun." In the early 20th Century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true. Other true things about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two. This was a terrible plan. Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge. Unhappy with his life in the zoo, Hippo sets out to find a job as Hippopotamister with some help from his friend, Red Panda.

Having been born in Africa during an era when owning a picture book, let alone affording TV was a luxury, ‘Tug Of War’ was inspired by many of the African folk stories that were told to us by my grandmother. These stories were occasionally told during evenings, after meals and were extremely entertaining as well as educational in a way that made me visualize them. As a result, I have been motivated to share this experience pictorially in this book. It tells of three characters, Elephant, Hippopotamus and Rabbit. The story begins deep in the African jungle where the agile and witty Rabbit entertains himself by challenging Elephant and Hippopotamus to a game of tug of war. The little animal selects the competitors on two distinct characteristics. They live in completely different environments and possess similar strengths. Elephant naturally prefers the inner jungle and Hippopotamus spends most of his time in the water. This presents a perfect opportunity for a perfect match with Rabbit handing each end of the rope to each large animal at different times declaring that he can defeat either Elephant or Hippopotamus to this pull game. It actually ends with both huge animals fiercely competing against one another yet ignorantly believing that Rabbit is on the other end. This teaches us to acknowledge and respect each other and not to judge each other in terms of natural built or stature.

Q. Why are there almost as many jokes about death as there are about sex? A. Because they both scare the pants off us. Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein first made a name for themselves with the outrageously funny New York Times bestseller Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar.... Now they turn their attention to the Big "D" and share the timeless wisdom of the great philosophers, theologians, psychotherapists, and wiseguys. From angels to zombies and everything in between, Cathcart and Klein offer a fearless and irreverent history of how we approach death, why we embrace life, and whether there really is a hereafter. As hilarious as it is enlightening, Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates is a must-read for anyone and everyone who ever expects to die. And now, you can read Daniel Klein's further musings on life and philosophy in Travels with Epicurus and Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change it.
