IAS Special Publication 35, Fluvial Sedimentology VII, comprises ofa series of peer-reviewed papers that were initially presented atthe 7th International Conference on Fluvial Sedimentology, held inLincoln, Nebraska on August 6-10, 2001. The 29 papers in this volume reflect the topical and geographicdiversity of exciting research conducted by fluvialsedimentologists at the beginning of the 21st century. Themesrepresented in this volume include (a) flow, sediment transport,and bedform dynamics, (b) characteristics of modern fluviallandforms, environments and systems, (c) physical analogue andnumerical modeling of fluvial systems, (d) the responses ofQuaternary fluvial systems to climate change, active tectonics,and/or sea-level change, and (e) characteristics of pre-Quaternaryfluvial deposits and evolution of pre-Quaternary fluvial systems.

Rivers and Floodplains is concerned with the origin, geometry, water flow, sediment transport, erosion and deposition associated with modern alluvial rivers and floodplains, how they vary in time and space, and how this information is used to interpret deposits of ancient rivers and floodplains. The Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), focus of this special publication, is a prolific hydrocarbon region and both exploration and production activity remains high to this day with a positive production outlook. A key element today and in the future is to couple technological developments to improving our understanding of specific geological situations. The theme of the publication reflects the immense efforts made by all industry operators and their academic partners on the NCS to understand in detail the structural setting, sedimentology and stratigraphy of the hydrocarbon bearing units and their source and seal. The papers cover a wide spectrum of depositional environments ranging from alluvial fans to deepwater fans, in almost every climate type from arid through humid to glacial, and in a variety of tectonic settings. Special attention is given to the integration of both analogue studies and process-based models with the insights gained from extensive subsurface datasets.
This volume presents a collection of papers given at a Rhine-LUCIFS (Land use and climate impact on fluvial systems), the aim being to bring together researchers with longstanding experience in developing concepts and modelling approaches for long term landscape evolution and scientists involved in more classical studies on the evolution of the Rhine river system. It is divided into two parts: part one reviews the Rhine river system and gives case studies to demonstrate the types of data that can be extracted from sedimentary archives. Deltas are amongst the most environmentally and economically important coastal sedimentary environments. Studies of deltas lag behind research in both fluvial and deep-water depositional systems, as well as more geomorphologically oriented land studies. This knowledge lag reflects both a reorientation of the petroleum industry in the last two decades toward deep-water systems, as well as the difficulty of working across the shoreline with the traditional tools used for oceanographic or land-based work. However, deltaic studies are experiencing a renewed focus, because of their global importance in environmental and other societal concerns. This volume stems from a special session: "Deltas: Old and New", held at the Annual Geological Society of America conference in October 2002, that was convened to highlight these new directions in deltaic research.
