Most of us hope to do what morality requires of us. But what if we can't figure out what it does require? A soldier may know that morality requires him not to kill an innocent civilian but he can't tell whether the driver of a suspicious car is an innocent civilian or a terrorist about to detonate a bomb. Holly M. Smith addresses this problem in Making Morality Work by asking whether we should reject moral codes that can't be used by anyone hampered by inadequate information. When considering questions of morality, we call on moral theories to play both a theoretical and a practical role. These theories provide accounts of what makes actions right or wrong, and also provide a standard by which agents can guide their own conduct. It is usually assumed that a single theory can serve both roles, but limited knowledge often prevents people from using traditional normative theories to make decisions. Smith examines three major strategies for addressing this 'epistemic problem' in morality before developing an innovative solution that overcomes the weaknesses of prior approaches. Making Morality Work opens a path towards resolving a deep problem in moral life.
Consequentialism is a focal point of moral philosophy. Recently, new wave consequentialists have presented theories which proved extremely flexible and powerful in meeting influential objections. The volume explores new directions within this project, raises fundamental problems for it, and gives a balanced assessment of its scope in commonsense moral practice.
This book argues that critics of consequentialism have not been able to make a successful and comprehensive case against all versions of consequentialism because they have been using the wrong methodology. This methodology relies on the crucial assumption that consequentialist theories share a defining characteristic. This text interprets consequentialism, instead, as a family resemblance term. On that basis, it argues quite an ambitions claim, viz. that all versions of consequentialism should be rejected, including those that have been created in response to conventional criticisms. The book covers a number of classic themes in normative ethics, metaethics and, particularly, ethical methodology and also touches upon certain aspects of experimental moral philosophy. It is written in clear language and is analytic in its argumentative style. As such, the book should appeal to students, graduate students as well as professional academics with an interest in analytic moral philosophy.
The African-American dramatist August Wilson, who was born in a Pittsburgh slum in 1945, saw the first professional productions of his plays in 1981 and 1982, in little theaters in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh. He had also begun sending his plays to the Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference, which sponsors workshops to develop the talents of young American playwrights. The Connecticut-based conference eventually accepted a work-in-progress, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (staged in 1984), and from that moment Wilson's career took off like, to use the title of his 1992 play, Two Trains Running. With Ma Rainey, Wilson began a ten-play cycle dramatizing different decades in the history of African Americans in the twentieth century. The other works in the still unfinished cycle include: Fences (staged in 1985), Joe Turner's Come and Gone (staged in 1986), The Piano Lesson (staged in 1990), Two Trains Running (staged in 1992), and Seven Guitars (staged in 1996).
Holly's neighbors, Joshua and Stewart, are fit, gorgeous, and gay -- or that's what she thinks. Then one day, after coming to his aid following an accident, she forms a deep connection with Joshua, and subsequently becomes a psychic voyeur into his love life with Stewart. Holly has never experienced anything so intense, erotic, and arousing before, and despite her confusion about why this has happened to her, she can think of little else but being in the bed with the two men. Joshua is trying to come to terms with being gay, and he's about to announce his sexuality to his family. But now Holly has entered the scene and he's drawn to her as well as to his partner, Stewart. Since his accident he feels close to Holly. She calms him...and arouses him. Sharing Stewart with her shouldn't be this much of a turn-on, but it is. Stewart is bisexual, and his attraction to Holly is something he's been keeping under wraps for the sake of his relationship -- until he discovers Joshua is attracted to her as well. When they end up in a threesome, sex has never been this hot, but Joshua is even more confused about his sexuality as a result. Then Holly confides her psychic ability, adding a whole new dimension that none of them can ignore. Her intuition has brought them together, but will it also tear them apart?
The GVAR is a global Vector autoregression model of the global economy. The model was initially developed in the early 2000 by Professor Pesaran and co-authors, for the main purpose of analysing credit risk in a globalised economy. Starting from mid-2000 the model was substantially enlarged in the context of a project financed by the ECB, to comprise all major economies and the Euro area as a whole. The purpose of this version was to exploit the rich modelisation of international linkages in order to simulate and analyse global macro scenarios of high policy interest. The rich, yet manageable, specification of international linkages has stimulated a vast literature on the GVAR. Since early 2011, the basic model - and its data base - has also available on a dedicated GVAR-Toolbox website with an easy-to-use interface allowing practical applications by an extended audience, as well as more complex analysis by the expert public. The book provides an overview of the extensions and applications of the GVAR which have been developed in recent years. Such applications are grouped in three main categories: 1) International transmission and forecasting; 2) Finance applications; and 3) Regional applications. By using a language which is accessible to not econometricians, the book reaches out to the extended audience of practitioners and policy makers interested in understanding channels and impacts of international linkages.

In the instruction and learning process, the role writing plays has often been overlooked. Writing is thinking! It is a tool for learning in all content areas. The ever-growing body of brain research supports that learning to write transitions into writing to learn as students progress through upper elementary, middle, high school, and college. Writing is much more than the ability to craft an analytical essay. Writing has the potential to engage students in critical thinking and critical reflection as historians, mathematicians, scientists, or experts in any content area. Writing is Thinking explores methods and activities to effectively incorporate writing to help learners successfully master, analyze, apply, and express content knowledge.
This two-book set contains the “Mopsies Twin Set”—A Lady of Resources and A Lady of Spirit, an edition of over 140,000 words. You can choose your friends, but you cannot choose your family … or can you? Under normal circumstances, sixteen-year-old twins Maggie and Lizzie would be delighted to meet their long-lost relatives and be reunited with those who had believed them dead, but when are the Mopsies’ circumstances ever to be considered normal? They are joyfully ready to embrace family and welcome them into the loyal circle that the Lady of Devices, Claire Trevelyan, has created from a formerly ragtag lot of alley mice. But the more time the Mopsies spend in Lizzie’s father’s castle in the Cotswolds and then their grandparents’ clifftop mansion in Cornwall, the more they realize that the events surrounding their mothers’ deaths are more mysterious—and dangerous—than anyone alive suspects. Worse, the events of the past are still reaching out to trigger the dangers of the present, and only a lady of resources and a lady of spirit may stand between the people they love … and certain death.
