Excerpt from History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, Vol. 1: With Historical Sketches of the District The first volume was published under many difficulties, as any one properly acquainted with the history of the ancient district should understand, and increased from other causes. As will be found in the Preface to the first volume, although subscribed by him, Mr. James Paterson mentioned that he was not the author of the work, but only the originator of the idea. He was then physically unable to undertake the heavy task. As a subscriber to two of his works on other subjects, I became acquainted with Mr. Paterson, and may add that I was one of the first, if not the first, to subscribe for this work. Un able to carry out his intention of writing it, he asked if I would do so, from having considerable information, and the interest taken in the subject. I acceded to his wish, but declined to have anything to do with the publishing, or receive any share from the sale of the work. My services have been gratuitous.
