Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Marietta College: Founded at Marietta, Ohio, 1835 This ordinance, says Judge Story, is equally remarkable for the brevity and exactness of its text, and for its masterly display of the fundamental principles of civil and religious liberty. Among the members of this colony were Colonel Israel Putnam (son of General Israel), with his sons, Dudley Woodbridge, Paul Fearing, Joshua Gilman, Benjamin Ives Gilman, Colonel R. J. Meigs, with his son, R. J. Meigs, J r., afterwards Governor of Ohio, and many others who were prominent men in the early history of the North-west.
