In the spring of 1860, Mr. Thomas Aiken, now deceased, and Wm. B. Negley, Esq., determined upon an effort to secure the organization of a Sabbath school in the neighborhood. Accordingly, notice was given, and on the afternoon of Sabbath, April 26, 1860, the first session of the school was held in the public school building on Aiken avenue, then known as Aiken's lane.
