The Fleming family first arrived in Ireland when Christopher Fleming, a wealthy ship owner, from Flanders, arrived in Erin in 1169. He had with him ninety knights in full armor, each with his own company of helpers. One of the knights was Richard le Fleming. He became the first palatinate Baron of Slane. The Barony was lost when Christopher Fleming (1669-1728), 22nd Baron of Slane, fled to France with James II after the Battle of Boyne. He was deprived of his estates. James Fleming, son of Randall, was born about 1775, in Slane Castle. He was determined to break from the baronial establishment in Slane, and as soon as he was old enough, immigrated to America. He bought a farm in Ontario County, New York. His son, Robert Lacy Fleming, was born there 5 March 1803. In 1818, the family moved to Indiana. They lived several places before settling in Bono, Lawrence County, Indiana. James died about 1845. Robert Lacy married Mrs. Jane (Strichfield) Wilson, of Pennsylvania, in 1831. They moved to Wysox Township, Carroll County, Illinois, in 1846. They had eight children. He died in 1879 and is buried near Milledgeville, Illinois.
