A comprehensive history of the Catholic Church from its beginnings in Jesus' ministry to its current status in an increasingly secular world.
This history of the Catholic church tells the story of the 2,000-year relationship between Jesus and the believers who have followed him. It is a story of people -- peasants and popes, saints and heretics, martyrs and apostates -- and how the faith has been passed down throughout the ages, generation to generation. The information is concise yet insightful, rendering a complete and accurate portrait of this centuries-old institution.

The Catholic Church is the longest-enduring institution in the world. Beginning with the first Christians and continuing in our present day, the Church has been planted in every nation on earth. The Catholic Church claims Jesus Christ himself as her founder, and in spite of heresy from within and hostility from without, she remains in the twenty-first century the steadfast guardian of belief in his life, death, and resurrection. The teachings and redemptive works of Jesus as told in the Gospels are expressed by the Church in a coherent and consistent body of doctrine, the likes of which cannot be found in any other Christian body. The history of the Catholic Church is long, complicated, and fascinating, and in this book it is expertly and ably told by historian James Hitchcock. As in the parable of Christ about the weeds that were sown in a field of wheat, evil and good have grown together in the Church from the start, as Hitchcock honestly records. He brings before us the many characters-some noble, some notorious-who have left an indelible mark on the Church, while never losing sight of the saints, who have given living testimony to the salvific power of Christ in every age. This ambitious work is comprehensive in its scope and in incisive in its understanding, a valuable addition to any school or home library.
The popular rich and unique pedagogical presentation of the Encountering Jesus series makes the study of Church history appealing, accessible, and applicable for upper level Catholic high school students in Catholic Church History, a brand new and updated textbook to support the Option B elective of the USCCB curriculum framework.

Excerpt from A History of the Catholic Church of Jesus Christ, From the Death of Saint John to the Middle of the Second Century: Including an Account of the Original Organisation of the Christian Ministry and the Growth of Episcopacy The conviction that this is the case, and the belief that there is an immense number of persons, who look upon the history of the Primitive Catholic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ as the most interesting of all subjects upon which the mind of man can be engaged, have led me to endeavour to write the Annals of its earliest period, subsequent to the Apos tolic Age, with no other aim or object in view, than simply to tell the truth, as the truth has presented itself to me, without a thought, either of upholding, or putting down any section of those countless millions who lay claim to the Christian name, and who believe that they have a share in the most noble and the most precious of all the possessions of the family of Adam, the common heritage of the religion of Christ. To me it seems that there has been enough of wrangling, enough of disputing. Henceforth, cannot Christians learn to be one in the love of the One Father, and of His One Only Begotten Son, and the One Eternal Spirit of grace and truth? When I began to write the History of the early Primitive Church, I had, as I have said, no other object in View than, in as simple and straightforward a manner as I could, to tell the truth. It was after I had begun to write, that the idea dawned upon me, by little and little, becoming at length like a fair, luminous orb of charity, that this very truth about the Primi tive Church was itself, not merely the best, but the only true Eirenicon.
